Charles Melton has experienced a remarkable career trajectory, gaining recognition in Todd Haynes’s ‘May December’ and earning two Emmy nominations for his performance in the second season of ‘Beef.’ This success led fans to speculate that Melton might be a candidate for Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated ‘X-Men‘ reboot, especially due to his close ties with the film’s director and writer, both of whom he collaborated with on ‘Beef.’

As the D23 event approached, excitement grew among fans who believed Melton could be unveiled as part of the film’s new mutant ensemble, potentially portraying Hank McCoy, also known as Beast. However, when Marvel revealed its cast on stage, Melton was noticeably missing, with reports indicating that his casting had fallen through prior to the announcement, leaving fans shocked by the unexpected turn of events.

Despite this setback, Melton expressed his ongoing interest in the project during a recent interview with Extra. He stated that it would be “incredible” to join the Marvel Studios ‘X-Men’ film, highlighting his appreciation for the creative team behind it. “I love Lee Sung Jin and I know he wrote it and I know Jake Schreier is directing it,” Melton shared. “I want to work with them many more times.”

This connection is significant. Both Lee Sung Jin, the creator of ‘Beef,’ and director Jake Schreier previously collaborated on ‘Thunderbolts,’ with Lee co-writing the script alongside ‘The Bear’ writer Joanna Calo before they teamed up again for Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ reboot. Melton starred in the second season of Lee’s Netflix anthology series, giving him valuable experience working with the same creative vision now shaping the new X-Men film.

Schreier has described his approach to the material as one that balances ideology with the interpersonal, soap-opera-style drama reminiscent of the early Chris Claremont-era X-Men comics, aiming to ground the film’s broader themes in authentic personal stakes among its characters. This vision, combined with Melton’s evident admiration for both collaborators, sheds light on why he continues to express his desire for a role in the project, even after missing the initial casting opportunity.

So far, Marvel has confirmed a cast that includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Adam Driver as the villainous Mister Sinister. The role of Beast remains unfilled following Melton’s reported exit from consideration, leaving the possibility open for either a new casting search or perhaps a change of heart from all parties involved in the future.

With Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirming that the reboot will follow ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on the release calendar, there is still ample time before production finalizes its full roster. Given Melton’s continued enthusiasm for a role, it wouldn’t be surprising if his name comes up again when Marvel has an opening to fill, especially with the character of Beast still available.
