Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Achieves Record Overseas Opening, Second Only to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
Christopher Nolan has dedicated nearly two decades to cultivating a strong following in China, where his intricate thrillers and grand epics have consistently attracted large audiences. This connection dates back to ‘Inception’ and later ‘Tenet,’ both of which became unexpected successes in the region, even as American viewers took longer to embrace them.
‘The Odyssey,’ Nolan’s ambitious adaptation of Homer’s classic poem, debuted in mainland China on August 14, 2026, launching across over 20,000 screens and nearly 800 IMAX locations. This release followed an extensive promotional campaign that featured a high-profile premiere in Beijing and a viral philosophical discussion between Nolan and a local podcaster.
The results are in, marking a significant career achievement for Nolan. ‘The Odyssey’ earned $36.3 million during its opening weekend in China, according to figures shared by the fan account Christopher Nolan Archives. This performance surpasses ‘Tenet’s’ $29.8 million debut in the same market, giving Nolan the largest three-day opening of his career in the country.

This impressive performance positions ‘The Odyssey’ as the second-largest Hollywood opening in China for 2026, trailing only ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ Sony’s superhero sequel debuted in the region in late July, grossing approximately $68.1 million over its opening weekend, a benchmark that few films this year have approached.
The IMAX figures tell an even more compelling story. The film’s opening weekend included a record $13.2 million from IMAX screens in China, accounting for 45% of the film’s total box office despite being shown on less than 1% of all screens. When including previews, the cumulative IMAX total reached $19.4 million, representing 53% of the film’s entire earnings in China.
Nolan’s IMAX success aligns with the film’s unique production, as ‘The Odyssey’ is the first feature entirely shot using IMAX film cameras. This technical achievement was developed in collaboration with cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema and IMAX engineers specifically for this project.
Nolan’s appeal to Chinese audiences was further highlighted during his Beijing press tour, where he engaged in an unusually open and philosophical discussion with podcaster Zhong Shu. This conversation garnered over 20 million views, as they explored themes of civilizational decline, heroism, and film criticism, generating additional buzz for the film ahead of its release.
Industry analysts had mixed predictions regarding how high ‘The Odyssey’ would soar. Some estimates suggested a three-day total between $35 million and $37 million, while more optimistic projections reached as high as $40 million to $50 million. The final figure landed closer to the conservative estimates but still significantly surpassed any previous Nolan release in the market.
For context, ‘Tenet’ had previously held the title for Nolan’s best debut in China, a notable achievement considering it opened in September 2020 during a pandemic-affected box office. ‘The Odyssey’ surpassed that mark by over $6 million, even while facing competition from the well-established ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and a thriving local box office, highlighting the strong demand for Nolan’s large-format spectacles in China.
The film’s debut in China comes as ‘The Odyssey’ continues to make waves globally, already ranking among the highest-grossing films of 2026 worldwide. A successful run in China will only bolster its position as the year progresses.
As ‘The Odyssey’ moves into its second and third weekends in China, it will be interesting to see if it can maintain this momentum, especially with new domestic competition on the horizon. For now, Nolan has yet another data point proving that his films resonate globally, even when the source material is nearly 3,000 years old.
