Maya Boyd Cast as Storm in Upcoming ‘X-Men’ Movie Announcement
Marvel has officially announced the casting of Storm in the upcoming ‘X-Men’ movie, surprising many fans with their choice.
Broadway actress Maya Boyd will portray Ororo Munroe, also known as Storm. The announcement was made by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige during Marvel’s D23 presentation in Anaheim on Friday night, August 15.
Boyd was not a name frequently discussed among fans prior to the announcement. Many had anticipated Jayme Lawson as a strong contender for the role following her performance in Sinners. Just a day before the D23 event, scooper Jeff Sneider suggested that Suzy Bemba was also in the running. Ultimately, Marvel opted for a completely unexpected choice.
Boyd made her official debut as Storm on stage alongside the new ‘X-Men’ cast. Blex Media noted that she had not been part of the main fan casting discussions prior to the announcement.
The online reaction was swift. One fan account dedicated to Storm, daily storm, tweeted after the reveal: MAYA BOYD LET US BREATHE.
This casting marks a significant milestone for Boyd, as the upcoming ‘X-Men’ movie will be her first feature film role. Until now, she has primarily been recognized for her work on Broadway.
Boyd made her New York stage debut in Merrily We Roll Along in 2023 while still a student at the University of Michigan. She later starred in Joe Turner’s Come and Gone alongside Taraji P. Henson before taking on the lead role in &Juliet, performing it eight times a week until transitioning to her Marvel role.
She joins a new ensemble of actors bringing Marvel’s mutants to the MCU. Sadie Sink will portray Jean Grey, Kit Connor has been cast as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott will play Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving will appear as Emma Frost, and Inde Navarrette will take on the role of Rogue.
Adam Driver also made a video appearance during the announcement, revealing he will play Nathaniel Milbury, the human identity of the X-Men villain Mister Sinister.
Marvel has yet to disclose the complete cast. Feige emphasized that these are just the initial major casting announcements, with more characters expected to be revealed in the future.
The film is directed by Jake Schreier, known for directing ‘Thunderbolts’. The script is penned by Lee Sung Jin, the creator of Beef, and Joanna Calo, who worked on The Bear. The film is currently set to hit theaters on May 5, 2028.
There is also increasing speculation about when fans might first see Boyd as Storm. Sadie Sink reportedly appeared as Jean Grey in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ before the full ‘X-Men’ cast announcement, leading to theories that Marvel could give Storm a similar early appearance.
Some fans have suggested that ‘Black Panther 3’ could be a potential venue for Boyd’s first appearance, although Marvel has not confirmed any details.
Boyd’s casting has already significantly boosted her social media presence. Reports indicate her Instagram account gained thousands of new followers, nearing 100,000 shortly after the announcement.
Storm was previously portrayed by Halle Berry in four ‘X-Men’ films from 2000 to 2014, with Alexandra Shipp later playing a younger version in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix.’
Now, Marvel is entrusting the role to a rising Broadway talent with no major film experience. It’s a bold move, but it could also become a pivotal moment in Boyd’s career.
