‘Godmother’ First Look Showcases Jacksepticeye and Alanah Pearce’s Indie Horror Film
The trend of content creators transitioning into feature filmmaking has emerged as a captivating aspect of independent horror. Following the success of Markiplier’s unexpected hit ‘Iron Lung,’ a new wave of internet personalities is now prioritizing original storytelling over the safety nets provided by studios.
Continuing this trend is ‘Godmother,’ an independently financed horror project from YouTube creators Alanah Pearce and Sean McLoughlin, known as Jacksepticeye. Ahead of its premiere at film festivals, TheWrap has unveiled an exclusive first look at the film, providing fans with their first glimpse of the completed project.
The narrative centers on Theo, a young woman in her late 20s portrayed by Paige Evans, who embarks on a romantic weekend getaway in the desert with her tech-bro boyfriend, played by Cameron Cuffe, alongside her sister, played by Riley Dandy. Upon arriving at their vacation rental, they encounter an unsettlingly hospitable couple, portrayed by horror veterans Dee Wallace and Bruce Davison, whose true intentions toward Theo quickly reveal a darker side.
Directed by John Veron and co-written by Veron and Pearce, ‘Godmother’ draws inspiration from classic horror films like ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and ‘The Return of the Living Dead.’ McLoughlin personally financed the film’s principal photography, while Helmstreet Pictures took care of post-production costs, ensuring the project maintained a genuinely independent trajectory from concept to completion.
This independence was a deliberate choice. Pearce shared that early attempts to secure traditional studio funding came with stipulations that would have significantly altered the film’s direction, including one financier’s demand for a major Hollywood actor to replace Davison.
“We could have pursued those options further, but in doing so, we would not have made ‘Godmother.’ We would have made some studio-mandated cash grab Frankenstein version of ‘Godmother.’ What’s the point?” Pearce told TheWrap.
Pearce also emphasized the intentional female perspective she infused into the script, highlighting that the story’s three central women were crafted as distinct individuals shaped by societal perceptions and judgments. This focus reflects a broader commitment to ensuring the project remained true to its original creative vision, resisting commercial pressures.
The release of the film coincides with a growing momentum for creator-led feature filmmaking, following the successes of projects like Markiplier’s ‘Iron Lung’ and other recent indie horror hits. Pearce noted that filming ‘Godmother’ back in December, ahead of several other creator-driven films hitting theaters, might work to the project’s advantage.
She expressed concern that an influx of studio-funded, creator-led features could eventually dilute the quality of the genre, making early, distinctive projects like ‘Godmother’ stand out even more by comparison. McLoughlin, who is also credited as a producer on the upcoming ‘Bloodborne’ film adaptation, indicated he is open to potentially directing in future projects.
The full cast includes Khary Payton, Carl Savering, and Madelynn Joy Stuenkel, rounding out an ensemble built around the story’s central deadly encounter. While a specific release date for ‘Godmother’ has yet to be announced, its upcoming festival premiere suggests that details on wider distribution may follow soon.
As creator-led horror continues to carve out a significant niche in the genre, ‘Godmother’ appears poised to be one of the more unique entries in this expanding wave.
