Few films have experienced a more tumultuous journey to the big screen than ‘Coyote vs. Acme.’ Initially completed and ready for release, the movie has faced years of cancellations, fan protests, and an unexpected revival that many thought would never occur.

This unlikely saga is finally approaching its conclusion. The live-action and animated hybrid comedy, which focuses on Wile E. Coyote and his long-standing rivalry with the ACME Corporation, is set to premiere in theaters on August 28, just days away from the film fans believed they might never see.

To build excitement ahead of the release, a new clip from the film has been shared online, offering viewers another glimpse into the tone and style of the completed project. In this scene, Will Forte’s character Kevin Avery, a struggling lawyer representing Wile E. Coyote, is seen greeting his colleague Dottie in an office setting, showcasing the film’s more grounded, human aspect.

The film reinterprets Wile E. Coyote’s endless series of failed ACME gadgets as the basis for a courtroom drama, with the cartoon character suing the company for producing faulty products. Forte’s character takes on the case against Buddy Crane, the lawyer for Acme, portrayed by John Cena, setting the stage for a legal clash between two distinct perspectives.

The path to this release has been anything but straightforward. ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ was completed in 2023 under Warner Bros., initially intended as a direct-to-streaming release for HBO Max, before the studio controversially shelved the finished film as part of a tax write-off strategy.

This decision led to significant backlash from fans and those involved in the production, placing ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ alongside other high-profile cancellations like ‘Batgirl’ during that time. The film remained in limbo for years, with reports even mentioning a so-called ‘funeral screening’ held for the project before its future seemed bleak.

Its eventual revival came through Ketchup Entertainment, an independent distributor that acquired the film’s rights for an estimated $50 million. This deal paved the way for the movie’s long-awaited theatrical release, transforming one of Hollywood’s most infamous shelved projects into a true comeback story.

Directed by Dave Green, with a screenplay by Samy Burch and a story credited to Burch, James Gunn, and Jeremy Slater, the film combines animated Looney Tunes characters with live-action actors in a style reminiscent of ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit.’ Lana Condor also stars as Paige Avery, complementing the film’s central legal drama alongside Forte and Cena.

The film’s premise draws inspiration from Ian Frazier’s 1990 New Yorker article ‘Coyote v. Acme,’ using that satirical legal framework as the foundation for a narrative that finally allows Wile E. Coyote to hold Acme accountable for years of malfunctioning gadgets and failed inventions. Given the film’s highly publicized journey from cancellation to release, its premiere carries cultural significance beyond just another animated comedy hitting theaters.

With the release date fast approaching, fans who have campaigned for the film’s survival will finally have the chance to see if it lives up to the expectations that helped bring it back from the edge.
