Hulu has been diligently reconstructing one of Fox’s most binge-worthy dramas over the past year. What started as a modest pilot order in late 2024 has evolved into a full series featuring an impressive lineup of familiar television veterans.

The original ‘Prison Break‘ captured viewers for five seasons with its thrilling escape narratives, following brothers Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows as they faced perilous challenges behind bars. Hulu’s new iteration remains within that universe but introduces an entirely new storyline, focusing on a fresh ensemble of characters navigating one of America’s most dangerous correctional facilities.

This new narrative just became even more intriguing. According to Deadline, six additional actors have joined the reboot in recurring roles: Sam Trammell, Sean Bridgers, Chris Coy, Kerry Bishé, Robin Weigert, and Jean Louisa Kelly.

These new cast members bring significant television experience to the project. Trammell, renowned for his seven-season stint on HBO’s ‘True Blood,’ will portray Jarrod Boggs, a powerful figure with deep ties to West Virginia. Bridgers, known for his role in ‘Deadwood,’ will play Hollis, a devoted family man striving to rebuild his life.

Bishé, recognized for her performance in ‘Halt and Catch Fire,’ takes on the role of Mary Smith, a mysterious and dangerous female inmate whose presence adds an element of unpredictability to the plot. Weigert, an Emmy nominee for her portrayal of Calamity Jane in ‘Deadwood,’ will play Chaplain Bannon, the prison’s chaplain who provides counsel to inmates facing their own personal challenges.

Completing the new additions, Kelly will portray Margaret, the new matriarch of a politically influential family, while Coy plays Mule, a volatile inmate whose unpredictability is set to disrupt the prison’s already tense atmosphere. Together, these new characters suggest that the reboot is delving into the themes of political and institutional corruption that were central to the original series.

These newcomers join a previously announced core cast led by Emily Browning as Cassidy, an ex-soldier turned corrections officer at the heart of the show’s primary conflict. The official logline describes her as someone who takes a job at one of America’s deadliest prisons to demonstrate how far she will go for someone she loves, offering a fresh perspective compared to the original brothers-on-the-run narrative.

Browning is joined by Drake Rodger as Tommy, Lukas Gage as Jackson, Clayton Cardenas as Michael, nicknamed “Ghost,” JR Bourne as Junior, Georgie Flores as Andrea, Kelli Berglund as Cheyenne, and Myles Bullock as Darius, nicknamed “Red.” This ensemble reflects a conscious effort to create a more gender-balanced prison environment, marking a significant shift from the original series’ predominantly male cast.

Elgin James, known for his work on ‘Mayans M.C.’ and ‘The Outlaws,’ serves as the reboot’s writer, showrunner, and executive producer, in addition to directing the pilot. Dawn Olmstead, who executive produced the original ‘Prison Break,’ returns for this new version, alongside original series creator Paul Scheuring, and executive producers Marty Adelstein and Neal Moritz.

With 20th Television once again behind the project, the reboot maintains a direct connection to the franchise’s origins while exploring a completely new narrative direction. Given the rapid expansion of the cast in recent months, production seems to be progressing steadily toward what could be one of Hulu’s most ambitious drama launches in the upcoming year.

With such a talented cast now secured, anticipation is growing for how Hulu’s ‘Prison Break’ will set itself apart from the original while still honoring the elements that made the franchise a success.
