‘Slow Horses‘ has earned acclaim for transforming MI5’s greatest blunders into some of the most captivating spy narratives on television. Over five seasons, Apple TV’s award-winning series has continually found innovative ways to challenge Gary Oldman’s foul-mouthed Jackson Lamb and his eclectic Slough House team.

This trend appears set to escalate dramatically in Season 6, where the entire Slough House crew finds themselves pursued by mysterious adversaries. A newly unveiled trailer provides a clearer glimpse into just how perilous and personal this next chapter will be for Lamb’s band of disgraced agents.

The trailer reveals a major surprise towards its conclusion: Olivia Cooke is making her return as Sidonie “Sid” Baker, the former MI5 agent presumed dead since Season 1, a comeback fans have speculated about for years.

Sid was shot and left in critical condition during the first season, with Diana Taverner later informing Lamb that she had succumbed to her injuries. This explanation never fully satisfied dedicated viewers, especially after the Season 1 finale hinted at her potential survival when River discovered that Sid’s MI5 records had been mysteriously erased.

Since departing from the series, Cooke has risen to prominence, currently portraying Alicent Hightower in HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon.’ Her return to ‘Slow Horses’ signifies a pivotal moment for a character whose fate has lingered as one of the show’s most enduring enigmas.

According to the official logline, Season 6 sees the Slow Horses on the run after Diana Taverner, played by Kristin Scott Thomas, pulls them into a perilous game of retaliation and revenge. The trailer begins with Lamb confronting Taverner, demanding to know why members of his team are turning up dead.

Catherine Standish, portrayed by Saskia Reeves, warns in the trailer that anyone associated with Slough House is now a target, setting the stage for a season steeped in paranoia and survival. Lamb’s blunt assessment of the dire situation, delivered in his characteristic brutal fashion, sums up the stakes succinctly: “It’s a blood bath.”

Season 6 adapts material from Mick Herron’s fifth and sixth Slough House novels, ‘Joe Country’ and ‘Slough House,’ providing a richer narrative foundation than some previous seasons. Adam Randall returns to direct, having also helmed the show’s fifth season.

Cooke’s return isn’t the only reunion hinted at in the trailer. Rosalind Eleazar is back as Louisa Guy, while Joanna Scanlan reprises her role as the infuriating Moira, both familiar faces returning as the team scrambles to alert former colleagues of the looming threat.

The returning cast also features Jack Lowden as River Cartwright, Christopher Chung as Roddy Ho, and Jonathan Pryce as River’s grandfather David Cartwright, completing the ensemble that has made ‘Slow Horses’ one of Apple TV’s most consistently acclaimed original series.

‘Slow Horses’ Season 6 premieres on September 16 on Apple TV, with new episodes released weekly until October 21. Given Sid’s mysterious fate’s centrality to the show’s overarching mythology, her return alone promises to elevate the emotional stakes for Lamb’s team as the new season unfolds.
