‘Outer Banks’ Prequel Series ‘Kildare’ in Development at Netflix as Original Show Ends
‘Outer Banks‘ has captivated audiences for five seasons, blending treasure hunts with teenage romance to become one of Netflix’s most successful young adult franchises. As the flagship series approaches its conclusion, the streaming platform is already planning its next move to keep the world of Kildare Island alive.
The series has always highlighted a significant social divide, a theme that has influenced nearly every storyline since its debut in 2020. It follows the working-class locals known as Pogues, residing in a neighborhood called The Cut, as they clash with and sometimes fall for the affluent seasonal residents known as Kooks, who live in the wealthier Figure Eight neighborhood.
Now, that foundational tension is set to receive its own origin story. According to Deadline, creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke are developing a prequel series, informally referred to as “Kildare,” which will explore how the class divide first emerged on the fictional island roughly two decades before the events of the original series.
The idea isn’t entirely new. Jonas Pate first mentioned the concept in interviews with Wilmington’s Port City Daily back in 2023 and 2024, and it has been steadily gaining traction as the creative team’s overall deal with Netflix has progressed. With the flagship series nearing its end, the trio seems ready to push the prequel into formal development.
Josh Pate has discussed the prequel’s premise as more than just a nostalgic look back; he frames it as a story with significant contemporary relevance. “It really is the story of how the island split — and it’s particularly relevant in our country right now — how it split into the haves and have-nots, how the Kooks and the Pogues started,” Pate stated. “How did this rift start?”
Burke echoed this sentiment, describing the prequel as an opportunity to revisit familiar themes through a new generation of characters. “And seen through the stories of some of the characters you know and some new characters,” Burke explained. “But they’re 20 years before, so it’s the parents’ generation.”
This timeline suggests the prequel could delve deeper into the backstories of characters already established in the original series, potentially including the parents of figures like Sarah Cameron, JJ Maybank, or Rafe Cameron, whose complex family histories have been gradually revealed throughout the flagship show. Given this setup, it’s unlikely that the current cast of Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, or Rudy Pankow will appear, as the story is set a generation earlier.

The announcement of the prequel comes just as ‘Outer Banks’ is set to premiere its fifth and final season on Netflix on August 20. This timing provides a seamless transition, wrapping up one chapter of the Kildare Island saga while generating excitement for what’s next.
Josh Pate confirmed that the project is currently in active script development with Netflix, although no casting choices or premiere date have been established yet. Given the creative momentum built over five successful seasons, expectations are high for how they will expand the franchise’s mythology into a new era.
With ‘Outer Banks’ proving to be one of Netflix’s most enduring YA hits, the studio’s interest in exploring the Kildare universe for more stories indicates they see significant potential in this world beyond its original characters.
