Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Begins Production After 5-Week Hiatus
Marvel Studios has been busy in 2026, managing the dual productions of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and its eagerly awaited sequel. Fans are eagerly following every update from Pinewood Studios in England as the studio navigates this challenging period.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have openly discussed the complexities of this overlap. In a conversation with Collider after Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, Anthony Russo described this phase as a whirlwind, balancing the finishing touches on ‘Doomsday’ while preparing for the next Avengers film, calling it “a complicated time in our lives, but thrilling.”
Now, that preparation has led to the cameras rolling. As reported by Filmbase, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ has officially commenced production in the UK, although it is currently on a planned five-week break, with filming expected to resume at the end of September.
Such early breaks are not uncommon for large-scale productions, especially considering the structure of ‘Doomsday.’ That film was shot from April to September 2025, with additional reshoots earlier this year, indicating that ‘Secret Wars’ might follow a similar staggered schedule as the Russos juggle both projects.
While plot details for ‘Secret Wars’ remain closely guarded, speculation is rife about its connection to ‘Doomsday’s’ conclusion. Industry insider Alex Perez from The Cosmic Circus has suggested that, aside from a few surviving heroes and villains, most of the MCU’s characters will fall under Doctor Doom’s control at the start of ‘Secret Wars,’ describing the premise as reminiscent of “WandaVision meets ‘What If…? The Avengers Assembled in 1602.’”
Though this specific plot framing is yet to be confirmed, the cast list is already shaping up to be one of the most extensive in franchise history. Reported names include Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom, alongside Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, Lewis Pullman, Florence Pugh, Danny Ramirez, Ian McKellen, Sebastian Stan, Winston Duke, Chris Hemsworth, Kelsey Grammer, James Marsden, and Channing Tatum.
Additionally, the cast from ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ is expected to transition directly into the film, featuring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach reprising their roles as Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm. Moss-Bachrach previously confirmed his filming timeline, indicating that a Broadway commitment scheduled to end in mid-July was planned to conclude before he began work on ‘Secret Wars.’
Given the shifting production calendar this year, some fans speculate that ‘Secret Wars’ might see its December 17, 2027 release date delayed, especially if its shooting schedule mirrors the extended timeline of ‘Doomsday.’ However, Marvel has yet to indicate any changes, and the confirmation of filming suggests the studio remains on track.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is still slated for release on December 18, marking the climax of Marvel’s current Multiverse Saga, with ‘Secret Wars’ set to follow in the subsequent year. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has previously described the two films as more of a reset than a full reboot, aiming to tie up loose ends from ‘Avengers: Endgame’ while paving the way for the franchise’s next chapter.
With production officially underway and a five-week break in place before filming resumes, fans have a clearer understanding of ‘Secret Wars’ status, even as most plot details remain under wraps. With such a large cast already assembled, the film is poised to be Marvel’s most extensive ensemble effort since ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
