Margaret Qualley Dazzles at ‘The Dog Stars’ London Premiere
Ridley Scott’s latest cinematic endeavor has been generating excitement for months, and this week the cast finally came together to celebrate that momentum in person. ‘The Dog Stars,’ Scott’s post-apocalyptic adaptation of Peter Heller’s 2012 novel, is set to hit UK cinemas on August 28, and its London premiere provided fans their first proper glimpse of the ensemble on the red carpet.
The film follows Hig, a civilian pilot portrayed by Jacob Elordi, as he navigates a world ravaged by a pandemic alongside Bangley, a tough ex-Marine played by Josh Brolin. Residing in an abandoned aircraft hangar with his dog, Hig’s fragile existence is upended when a mysterious radio transmission leads him to believe that other survivors may still exist beyond the safety of his refuge.
Among the standout cast members at the premiere was Margaret Qualley, who plays Cima, a young medic and Hig’s love interest, characterized in official materials as a woman with a tragic past who finds solace with him amid the chaos. Qualley captivated on the red carpet in a floor-length black fringe dress with a plunging V-neckline, her dark hair styled long and loose, and she completed her striking look by going barefoot for the occasion.
Qualley’s connection to the project dates back to earlier reports on the film’s casting, where she joined alongside Brolin and Guy Pearce to complete the ensemble following Elordi’s casting as the lead. Pearce plays Pops, a former Navy SEAL and Cima’s father, introducing a family dynamic to the survival narrative that parallels the central relationship between Hig and Cima.
The cast also features Allison Janney as Darlene, an eccentric stewardess encountered in Grand Junction, and Benedict Wong as Aaron, who serves as the quiet backbone of a hidden Mennonite community struggling to survive in the bleak post-pandemic world. This ensemble reflects Scott’s knack for surrounding his leads with a talented group of character actors who can ground even the most expansive survival stories.
Interestingly, the path to this cast wasn’t entirely straightforward. Paul Mescal was initially attached to star but had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts with Sam Mendes’ Beatles anthology films, ultimately paving the way for Elordi to take on the lead role of Hig.
Scott co-wrote the screenplay adaptation with Mark L. Smith, drawing from Heller’s acclaimed novel about a former pilot living in a Colorado airplane hangar with his dog and a gun-toting companion. The narrative kicks into gear when Hig, flying his old Cessna, picks up a mysterious transmission that sends him on a quest for its source, uncertain whether he will find hope or further danger at the end of that signal.
Produced through Scott’s own Scott Free Productions alongside Michael Pruss and Cliff Roberts, ‘The Dog Stars’ marks another addition to Scott’s prolific late-career run of ambitious genre filmmaking, following recent works that have kept the 87-year-old director firmly in the awards and box office spotlight. The film carries a reported budget of $110 million and is being distributed by 20th Century Studios.
With the London premiere now behind them, the cast moves forward into the film’s wider theatrical rollout, buoyed by the growing excitement surrounding both the story’s dark, character-driven premise and the star power assembled to bring it to life. Given the attention Qualley’s premiere look garnered, expectations for the film itself seem to be soaring as its release date approaches.
