DC Studios has been strategically expanding its television lineup under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, aiming to demonstrate that its small-screen offerings can rival the ambition of its theatrical projects. This challenge has become even more pronounced as superhero franchises face intense scrutiny when transitioning their stories to streaming platforms.

The premiere numbers for this week were particularly noteworthy. ‘Lanterns,’ a cosmic detective drama co-created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, debuted this past Sunday night on HBO and HBO Max, marking the third live-action series to join the new DCU continuity.

The results have surpassed expectations. ‘Lanterns’ attracted 9.3 million global viewers within its first three days, according to Variety, making it the largest premiere for any DC Studios show on HBO Max to date and placing it among the platform’s top five series launches overall.

Of that global total, 6.6 million viewers were from the United States, a figure that outperformed several recent flagship debuts from HBO. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this U.S. number surpassed ‘It: Welcome to Derry’s’ 5.7 million three-day launch, ‘The Penguin’s’ 5.3 million over four days, and ‘True Detective: Night Country’s’ single-night debut of 2 million viewers.

These comparisons are significant because all three shows went on to become major successes for the network. ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ ultimately averaged 27.1 million global viewers, while ‘The Penguin’ and ‘True Detective: Night Country’ settled at 19.8 million and 17.5 million respectively, indicating that ‘Lanterns’ has substantial potential for growth as word of mouth spreads throughout its run.

The series follows Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan, a veteran of the Green Lantern Corps, and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart, a new recruit under his mentorship, as they investigate a murder in the American heartland that quickly escalates into a larger cosmic mystery. This premise has garnered early acclaim for its blend of detective-noir elements with the show’s fantastical superhero lore.

In addition to outperforming other DC Studios series, ‘Lanterns’ also surpassed HBO’s own ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ which attracted 6.7 million U.S. viewers during its first three days back in January. This comparison positions ‘Lanterns’ among the network’s strongest recent launches across various genres, not just within the superhero realm.

The show’s momentum has continued since its debut. As of this week, the premiere episode remains the top title on HBO Max’s daily Top 10 list, a streak that has persisted since Sunday’s launch, indicating sustained interest beyond initial curiosity.

The cast alongside Chandler and Pierre includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Paul Ben-Victor, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones, with Nathan Fillion set to reprise his role as fellow Lantern Corps member Guy Gardner later in the season. New episodes will be released weekly on Sundays.

For a franchise still working to solidify its presence in both film and television, ‘Lanterns’ achieving DC Studios’ strongest streaming debut to date offers an early but significant endorsement. With co-creator Tom King emphasizing that the show is designed to carry substantial narrative weight within the DCU rather than serving as mere filler, these premiere numbers suggest audiences are responding positively to that ambition.
