Adria Arjona’s Training Sparks Wonder Woman Rumors for ‘Man of Tomorrow’
James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe has been racing ahead since the release of ‘Superman’ last year, with its sequel quickly becoming one of the most anticipated projects in the superhero genre. Every new piece of information about ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ from villain announcements to cast additions, has fans buzzing with speculation about Gunn’s vision for Metropolis.
Much of this speculation revolves around a particular casting mystery that remains unresolved. In April, it was announced that Adria Arjona would be joining the sequel after an extensive audition process that also featured Eva De Dominici, Sydney Chandler, and Grace Van Patten. However, DC Studios has yet to officially confirm which character she will portray.
Despite the uncertainty, Arjona has been visibly preparing for her role, with new workout photos showcasing her impressive fitness ahead of production. Fans are actively debating whether she will portray Maxima, an alien queen linked to Superman’s lore, or perhaps even the DCU’s version of Wonder Woman.
Reports at the time of her casting suggested that Maxima was the character in focus, with both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter indicating that she was the target of the rigorous audition process. However, DC Studios has refrained from commenting on her specific role, allowing the Wonder Woman theories to persist among fans who believe Arjona would be an ideal fit for Diana Prince.
Gunn has previously addressed the casting speculation, pushing back against earlier reports regarding the audition process. He criticized coverage that named potential Maxima candidates as “shoddy and incorrect” on Threads, asserting that all major roles in the film had already been filled at the time of those reports, although this denial came before Arjona’s casting was confirmed weeks later.
During a San Diego Comic-Con appearance, Arjona expressed that her decision to join the project was not solely about the character. She shared with Collider that joining Gunn and DC Studios co-head Peter Safran felt like a homecoming, stating, “In the process of auditioning, they put me through it even as a family member and made me earn it.” She emphasized the importance of the people involved, saying, “when you decide to join a universe or join a family, the people are the most important, and I love them to pieces. I’ve known them forever. They gave me my first shot and then this shot, so I’m so excited.”
This personal connection dates back to Gunn’s 2016 film ‘The Belko Experiment,’ which was one of Arjona’s early genre roles. Since then, she has built a diverse career with roles in ‘Hit Man,’ ‘Andor,’ and ‘Splitsville,’ showcasing the range that has made her a fan-favorite choice for major franchise roles even before this casting news emerged.
‘Man of Tomorrow’ features David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, who must work together to confront Brainiac, portrayed by Lars Eidinger. The ensemble cast also includes Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisondo, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, and Nathan Fillion, with Aaron Pierre reprising his role as John Stewart from ‘Lanterns,’ further connecting the expanding DC Studios universe.
Arjona confirmed during her Comic-Con discussion that filming had not yet commenced, indicating that her visible training is likely early preparation ahead of a production start that is still forthcoming. With ‘Man of Tomorrow’ set for a July 9, 2027 release, fans have ample time to speculate about which iconic DC character Arjona is getting ready to portray.
