‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Runtime Is Reportedly Longer Than Original Release
Marvel Studios has been building excitement for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ over the past year, employing a unique strategy that encourages fans to revisit the franchise’s last major crossover before the new one arrives. This initiative was first confirmed at CinemaCon back in April.
Disney and Marvel are set to re-release ‘Avengers: Endgame’ under the title ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ featuring a custom introduction, additional footage, and a special end tag that connects the story directly to ‘Doomsday.’ Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have positioned this re-release as more than just a nostalgia trip, emphasizing that the new footage is intricately linked to the ‘Doomsday’ storyline integrated into the 2019 film.
As the September 25 theatrical return approaches, a new runtime detail has emerged, offering fans insight into the amount of new material included. ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ is reportedly 3 hours and 5 minutes long, which is about four minutes longer than the original theatrical version that premiered in 2019.
This additional runtime aligns with previous reports about the re-release’s content. Comic Book Co. noted that the new material will be exclusive to IMAX and Infinity Vision certified screens, meaning fans eager to catch every added moment will need to seek out these specific premium formats when the film returns.
During the original CinemaCon announcement, Joe Russo highlighted the importance of this re-release, stating that the new footage was intentionally designed to connect the two films. “It’s critically important to rerelease the movie, and, in fact, we’ll be re-releasing the film with footage that is set in the Doomsday story that we have added to Avengers: Endgame. It’s an opportunity to create a bridge from Endgame to Doomsday in a very unique way,” Russo explained, as reported by Yahoo.
Early reports about the new footage suggest significant reveals, including a new Avengers Tower with an updated red-and-white logo, what is described as the first-ever shared scene between X-Men and Avengers characters, and a sequence featuring Yelena Belova in action. While these details have not been officially confirmed by Marvel, they have generated considerable buzz leading up to the film’s return.
The new ‘Infinity Vision’ format represents Disney’s response to losing exclusive IMAX access for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ as Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three’ secured a three-week IMAX exclusivity window for the same December release date. Both ‘Endgame Encore’ and ‘Doomsday’ will utilize Infinity Vision-certified screens to provide a premium theatrical experience.
‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ is set to hit theaters worldwide on September 25, strategically positioned about twelve weeks before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’s’ premiere on December 18. This timing places the re-release between two of the year’s biggest Marvel events, following the record-breaking summer run of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and paving the way for the December crossover.
With Robert Downey Jr. returning to the franchise as Doctor Doom instead of Tony Stark, offering fans one last chance to see ‘Endgame’s’ Avengers before ‘Doomsday’ alters everything seems like a purposeful emotional setup from Marvel. Given the reportedly extensive new footage, longtime fans may discover entirely new layers in a story they thought they knew by heart.
