Isekai anime has long battled a reputation for being repetitive and filled with disposable power fantasies. However, ‘Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World’ has been steadily dismantling that perception over four seasons, and its latest installment has reached unprecedented heights for the genre.

This remarkable achievement centers on Season 4, which premiered on April 8 and has garnered some of the highest user ratings ever recorded for anime on IMDb. Out of the first 11 episodes, eight received ratings above 9 out of 10, with the final four episodes maintaining an impressive streak of near-perfect scores as the season reached its midpoint.

The pinnacle of this streak was Episode 11, which achieved a perfect 10/10 rating on IMDb, marking the first time any television episode has reached that score in nine years. It is also the first isekai or light-novel adaptation to achieve such a feat. With over 23,000 ratings contributing to this score, the consensus around this perfect average is particularly rare, as high volumes of user ratings typically trend towards more average numbers rather than perfection.

This episode-level success extends to the entire season, which currently boasts a weighted average of 9.4 out of 10 on IMDb, officially making it the highest-rated anime series in the platform’s history, as reported by fan account Anime Tokki. This places ‘Re:Zero’ ahead of other notable 2026 contenders, with ‘My Hero Academia’ Season 8 closely following at 9.40 based on 176,000 ratings, and ‘Attack on Titan’ Season 3 at 9.3 with over 1.1 million ratings.

The breakdown of individual episode ratings reveals a story of remarkable consistency. Scores for episodes in the season’s first cour ranged from 8.7 to 9.9, with several episodes clustering in the high 9s as the narrative built toward its climax, contrasting sharply with the uneven pacing often seen in long-running anime adaptations.

However, this consistency faced some backlash. According to ScreenRant’s coverage, Episode 11’s perfect 10 rating held for nearly a full day before a wave of negative reviews from disappointed fans slightly lowered the score to 9.9. The episode’s rating breakdown showed over 51,000 perfect scores against just over a thousand ratings of 1 out of 10, an unusually polarized reaction even by anime fandom standards.

The momentum of Season 4 has also been reflected on other platforms. As reported by ScreenRant, the season’s strong reception propelled ‘Re:Zero’ to second place on MyAnimeList’s Top 100 anime rankings, highlighting the show’s crossover success across multiple major rating platforms.

The first cour concluded with Episode 11’s cliffhanger, where protagonist Natsuki Subaru regains his determination to fight after an emotional exchange with Emilia, despite unresolved memories. The second half, titled “The Recapture Arc,” premiered on August 12, picking up directly from that emotional high and continuing to build on the season’s record-breaking success.

With 44 volumes of source material still available and the anime only partway through adapting it, ‘Re:Zero’ shows no signs of running out of story. Given how decisively Season 4 has rewritten the record books for both isekai anime and IMDb’s rating history, expectations for how “The Recapture Arc” concludes are higher than ever.
