Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ Reportedly Becomes Netflix’s Most Expensive Movie Ever
Fantasy franchises are notoriously expensive, especially when a studio aims to create a multi-film universe rather than just a single adaptation. Netflix has been quietly demonstrating its confidence in its upcoming project, which is set to be a significant venture.
Greta Gerwig’s interpretation of C.S. Lewis’s cherished ‘Narnia’ series has remained largely under wraps for months, with fans receiving only cast announcements and sporadic behind-the-scenes glimpses. Despite the limited information, speculation about the film’s scale has been steadily increasing.
Recent reports indicate that ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ has a staggering production budget of 280 million dollars, which would make it the most expensive film Netflix has ever produced. This budget places it in an elite category, even among the streamer’s already lavish blockbuster offerings.
The reported budget has varied throughout the year, with some insiders initially estimating it to be over 320 million dollars. Journalist Matt Belloni first mentioned this possibility on his podcast, The Town, stating, “I’ve heard it’s going to be the most expensive movie Netflix has ever made,” and noted that it would rank among the streamer’s most costly productions, regardless of the final figure.
If the 280 million dollar estimate holds true, ‘Narnia’ would surpass Netflix’s current record holder, ‘The Electric State,’ a sci-fi film by the Russo brothers featuring Chris Pratt, which had a production cost of 320 million dollars. Other notable high-budget films from Netflix include ‘The Irishman’ at 225 million dollars and both ‘Red Notice’ and ‘The Gray Man’ at around 200 million dollars each.
For Gerwig, this budget marks a significant increase from her previous projects. Her Oscar-nominated 2023 hit ‘Barbie’ had a relatively modest budget of 145 million dollars, meaning ‘Narnia’ would nearly double the scale of her prior work.
This level of investment is closely tied to Netflix’s ambitious plans for the franchise. The streamer has committed to an extended 49-day theatrical exclusivity period before the film’s streaming release, a notable shift from the typical two-week theatrical runs Netflix has historically offered its original films.
The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, Ciarán Hinds, Denise Gough, and Susan Wokoma, providing ‘Narnia’ with a prestigious lineup that matches its reported budget. The adaptation is based on C.S. Lewis’s 1955 novel and is scheduled to hit theaters on February 12, 2027, before streaming on Netflix on April 2, 2027.
However, production has faced challenges. Recent reports indicate that the film underwent reshoots in London following disappointing test screenings, including one in Paramus, New Jersey, where audiences viewed an unfinished two-hour cut with incomplete visual effects. Netflix opted for additional filming to address concerns raised during these early screenings, given the project’s substantial financial stakes.
Despite the rocky test-screening feedback, those involved in the production have praised the film’s creative direction. Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, who recently viewed a rough cut with Gerwig in London, described the project as “the biggest budget hand-knitted project,” according to NarniaWeb, adding that the filmmaking team approached it with “a dream of poetry in our souls.”
With Netflix positioning ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ as a cornerstone for a larger franchise, the streamer’s willingness to invest at this level underscores its commitment to the long-term potential of Lewis’s fantasy universe. Ultimately, the success of this investment will depend on audience reactions when the film finally debuts in theaters early next year.
