Splitting up the two leads can be a risky decision for a new series, particularly one that thrives on the chemistry between its central characters. In its second episode, ‘Lanterns’ took that chance and successfully expanded the show’s mythology.

The HBO series has spent its initial episodes establishing a grounded, detective-driven interpretation of the Green Lantern mythos, featuring Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan training Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart as they investigate a mysterious alien incident in Rushville, Nebraska. Episode 2, titled ‘Trust Fall,’ picks up shortly after the premiere, sending Hal and John on separate journeys for much of the hour.

The episode begins with a mundane issue for a man wielding one of the universe’s most powerful weapons: Hal’s Green Lantern ring needs charging. He sends John back to Coast City to retrieve his power battery, framing the task as another part of his training, although John suspects his mentor primarily wants him out of the way.

At Hal’s home, John discovers glimpses of the life his reluctant mentor has kept at a distance, including a collection of old Green Lantern uniforms and eventually locating the lantern hidden in a pocket dimension. The clue to unlocking the storage box is “Mogo doesn’t socialize,” referencing the classic 1985 comic story that introduced the sentient planet Mogo. John also encounters Earl Jordan, Hal’s half-sentient, man-eating alien plant, before stepping outside and being abducted by a mysterious group of aliens.

The aliens holding John identify themselves as remnants of a species targeted by the Manhunters, robotic predecessors of the Green Lanterns with a dark history of genocide. Their leader, Antaan, explains that the Manhunters can take on the appearance of other species and adopt their technology, injecting John with the memories of a Manhunter that wiped out an entire population, a tragedy that originally drew the Green Lanterns’ attention and intervention.

Antaan believes a Manhunter is still alive and hiding somewhere in Rushville. Since his people cannot enter town without being detected, he gives John forty-eight hours to identify the Manhunter himself before they take action. During this encounter, John also manifests a strange green bird construct, an ability that piques Hal’s interest when they reunite, suggesting John’s powers may be developing in unexpected ways.

Meanwhile, back in Rushville, Hal faces his own challenges. After encountering Deputy Zoe Macon, he returns to the motel and finally charges his ring by reciting the Green Lantern oath. Elsewhere, Hal digs up several bodies from the local morgue and runs them through what appears to be a metal detector but is actually alien-detection technology, prompting a warning from Sheriff Kerry Kane, who cautions him against bringing the bodies to William Macon, Zoe’s father and a local figure stirring up fear about the alien invasion.

The episode’s biggest twist occurs in its closing moments. After John returns and shares everything about his abduction and the Manhunter threat, it is revealed that a Manhunter was responsible for the death of Abin Sur, the original bearer of Hal’s ring, directly linking the ancient robotic threat to the show’s foundational Green Lantern mythology.

Hal then visits Sinestro, the disgraced former Green Lantern played by Ulrich Thomsen, who warns him to be cautious of John. This confrontation marks the character’s first appearance in the series, reintroducing one of DC’s most iconic villains after being absent from any live-action property for nearly fifteen years.

Despite the rising tension around them, Hal and John conclude the episode on the same page, united by a common goal: to find the Manhunter without allowing Rushville to descend into chaos. With Hal’s eventual death in 2026 still looming over the entire season’s timeline, ‘Trust Fall’ makes it clear that the Manhunter mystery and Sinestro’s warning are likely to play a significant role in how that fate ultimately unfolds.

‘Lanterns’ continues airing new episodes every Sunday on HBO and HBO Max through its finale on October 4.
