Detective dramas rarely serve as superhero origin stories, but HBO’s latest DC series has successfully merged both genres into a refreshing experience. With two episodes already aired, ‘Lanterns’ has shown a commitment to building atmosphere and character development over flashy cosmic visuals.

This approach has proven effective, as the series crafts a slow-burn mystery surrounding veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and his newly appointed protégé, John Stewart. As we look forward to the next episode, HBO Max has unveiled a brief preview for Episode 3, maintaining the show’s trend of providing just enough intrigue to keep fans engaged while withholding major plot details.

The Episode 3 preview features the tagline “John Stewart was born for this,” aptly reflecting the show’s focus on John’s evolution as he embraces his role as a Green Lantern. Beyond this teaser, HBO has kept specific plot elements under wraps, consistent with its marketing strategy throughout the series’ rollout.

For those just joining, ‘Lanterns’ begins with a shocking flash-forward: in 2026, Hal Jordan is discovered dead in Rushville, Nebraska, sitting upright in the snow with a bullet wound above his eye and his Green Lantern ring missing. The narrative then shifts back to 2016, where most of the season unfolds as Hal mentors John while they investigate an alien incident at the local sheriff’s station.

Episode 2, titled “Trust Fall,” separated the two Lanterns for a significant portion of its runtime. John was tasked with retrieving Hal’s power battery from his home in Coast City, only to be captured by a group of aliens who revealed the existence of the Manhunters, a genocidal robotic race that once served as Green Lantern predecessors before being eradicated for their brutality. The aliens gave John a tight deadline of forty-eight hours to identify a surviving Manhunter hiding in Rushville, all while John began to manifest a mysterious new ring construct resembling a bird.

Meanwhile, in Rushville, Hal was busy investigating exhumed bodies using alien-detection technology, prompting a warning from Sheriff Kerry Kane about escalating tensions in town. The episode concluded with two significant revelations: confirmation that a Manhunter was responsible for the death of Abin Sur, the original bearer of Hal’s ring, and the live-action introduction of Sinestro, the disgraced former Green Lantern, who advised Hal against trusting his new partner.

Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, ‘Lanterns’ emphasizes a grounded, character-driven narrative rather than traditional superhero spectacle, drawing frequent comparisons to shows like ‘True Detective.’ Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre lead the cast as Hal and John, supported by a strong ensemble that includes Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry Kane, Garret Dillahunt and Jason Ritter as father-and-son duo William and Billy Macon, Poorna Jagannathan, and Laura Linney.

The series also plays a crucial role in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s broader DC Universe, directly connecting to the studio’s larger shared continuity while telling a mostly self-contained story. This balance between franchise expansion and standalone storytelling has emerged as one of the show’s unique qualities, especially considering how unconventional a grounded detective drama is for DC’s television lineup.

With eight episodes planned and new installments being released weekly, ‘Lanterns’ still has ample opportunity to explore its central mysteries, including the identity of Hal’s killer in 2026 and the roles that John, Sinestro, and the Manhunters will play in that outcome. As the season progresses into its third chapter, fans can anticipate that the show’s deliberate pacing will continue to yield carefully revealed plot points rather than rushed conclusions.
