Hayley Atwell Calls Captain Carter’s Death in ‘Doctor Strange 2’ a Complete Disservice
Fan-favorite Marvel characters often don’t receive the farewell that audiences desire, especially when they appear in a multiverse-hopping cameo alongside numerous other variants vying for attention. One instance that has sparked considerable frustration is a particular blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment from 2022.
Hayley Atwell has dedicated over a decade to developing Peggy Carter into one of the MCU’s most cherished characters, starting from her debut in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ to her own spin-off series and various franchise appearances. Her alternate-universe counterpart, Captain Carter, first emerged in the animated series ‘What If…?’ before making her live-action debut in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.’
Unfortunately, that live-action introduction did not unfold as fans or Atwell had hoped. During her appearance at the For the Love of Fantasy and Sci-Fi convention in London, Atwell expressed her disappointment regarding how the film portrayed her character’s brief and brutal on-screen demise.
“If I’m really, like, brutally honest, I was so disappointed with how they, how they positioned her and what happened to her in that scene,” Atwell stated during her convention panel. “She’s like, ‘I could do this all day.’ And then it’s like frisbee’d to death, and we’re like, ‘No, you couldn’t.’ And then people going, ‘Oh, she’s so lame.’”
In the scene, Captain Carter, part of the alternate-universe Illuminati team, confidently declares her iconic catchphrase just before Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch kills her with her own shield. The sudden, almost comedic nature of her death has remained a sore point for fans who believed the character deserved a more significant introduction to live-action following her success in animated form.
Atwell shared that she attempted to advocate for a more substantial portrayal of her character’s brief appearance, telling the filmmaking team she wanted to add depth to the scene. However, she reported that while they acknowledged her concerns, they ultimately chose not to implement any changes.
This creative pushback highlights a broader frustration Atwell has previously expressed regarding the scene. She has described feeling “so undermined” watching her character’s memorable “I could do this all day” line immediately followed by an almost throwaway death, viewing it as a moment where Captain Carter was set up as a potential hero only to be discarded within moments.

The larger context of the scene has not helped its standing among fans. Captain Carter’s death occurred alongside other beloved Illuminati members, including John Krasinski’s Reed Richards and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, all of whom met similarly abrupt fates at the hands of Wanda Maximoff during the film’s darker turn into full villain territory.
For a character introduced with such promise in ‘What If…?’, where Peggy Carter received the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, the live-action version’s brief and undignified ending felt like a significant letdown for many longtime fans. The disconnect between the character’s animated potential and her live-action treatment has only become more pronounced as Atwell has continued to speak candidly about the experience in interviews and convention appearances since the film’s release.
As Marvel continues to delve into multiverse storytelling with its ongoing slate, including the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ questions about whether Captain Carter could return in a more significant role remain a hot topic among fans. For now, Atwell’s recent comments underscore that even years after the film’s release, the character’s treatment in ‘Multiverse of Madness’ still resonates painfully.
