Disney Faces Negligence Lawsuit Over Alleged Abuse of Child Actress on ‘The Proof Point’
Hollywood has been grappling with its past of shielding powerful abusers instead of protecting the young talents who worked alongside them. This reckoning continues to unfold in courtrooms nationwide, as more former child stars come forward decades later to hold major studios accountable.
The latest case involves Raquel Lee Boileau, who starred as a child actress in Disney Channel’s 2001 original movie ‘The Proof Point.’ Boileau, who also appeared in the docuseries ‘Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,’ has been vocal about the troubling realities of children’s television production during that time.
On August 21, Boileau filed a negligence lawsuit against the Walt Disney Company in Los Angeles Superior Court, claiming she was repeatedly sexually abused while filming in Utah at the age of fourteen. The lawsuit, brought forth by New York-based law firm Wigdor LLP, alleges that Disney was aware of the abuse and failed to take action.
The filing identifies the alleged abuser only as “John Doe,” described as a middle-aged male Disney employee involved in the production. The complaint asserts that “Mr. Doe’s sexual abuse of Ms. Boileau was apparent to the adults on Disney’s set,” and further claims that “Defendant Disney repeatedly failed Ms. Boileau” by enabling and concealing the abuse instead of protecting her.
The lawsuit goes beyond detailing the alleged abuse, suggesting that Boileau’s case reflects a broader institutional pattern. It states, “This is not the first time that Disney has enabled a sexual predator to target and abuse vulnerable victims,” alleging a history of protecting abusers that predates 2001 and persists today.
Additionally, the suit claims that Boileau faced harsh criticism from Disney executives regarding her performance during a time when she was visibly struggling, describing her as “visibly disheveled.” The complaint argues that the studio’s environment failed to provide the necessary protections for child actors during production.
Attorneys for Boileau positioned the case within a larger industry reckoning. “Over the last decade, countless child actors have come forward to bravely share their experiences of abuse by adults in entertainment,” said Wigdor LLP attorneys Doug Wigdor and Jane Kim in a statement, emphasizing that those who enabled such conduct must be held accountable.
Boileau’s lawsuit comes amid a surge of legal actions against major studios over alleged misconduct spanning decades. Disney has faced multiple related lawsuits in recent years, including cases tied to Harvey Weinstein’s time at Miramax, which operated under Disney’s corporate umbrella, as well as more recent workplace harassment claims involving current productions.
‘The Proof Point’ originally aired on the Disney Channel on September 14, 2001, featuring Boileau alongside Tahj Mowry as the children of two eccentric scientists in a time-travel narrative. The film was a staple of the network’s early-2000s original movie lineup, a period that has come under increased scrutiny following documentaries and testimonies revealing troubling behind-the-scenes conditions for child performers across the industry.
Boileau’s lawsuit is seeking a jury trial and unspecified monetary damages from Disney. As more former child actors continue to share allegations spanning decades of children’s television and film production, cases like this one are shaping an ongoing industry-wide conversation about accountability, oversight, and the protections owed to young performers on set.
