Kevin Feige Confirms Some Original X-Men Stars Are Returning to the MCU After Avengers: Doomsday
Marvel’s reboot of the X-Men franchise has become a focal point of interest among fans, primarily due to the studio’s decision to phase out a beloved cast that has portrayed these characters for over two decades. Many fans have been speculating about the reasons behind Marvel’s choice to move on from the actors of the Fox era instead of integrating them into the new timeline.
This speculation has often revolved around contract issues, with many believing that the decision to recast the X-Men was largely influenced by the expiration of contracts for actors like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden. Some of these actors are expected to make a final appearance in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ before the franchise introduces an entirely new cast. Kevin Feige has now addressed this assumption directly.
During an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Feige discussed whether expiring contracts in 2025 were the main reason for the recasting of the X-Men. His response indicated that the situation is much more complex than a simple expiration date dictating the decision.
“I don’t even know all the contracts. I mean there are people who are attached for much longer than 2025 and will be a part of them [the upcoming films],” Feige stated, suggesting that some original cast members are still contractually tied to the franchise beyond the timeline many fans had assumed.
This comment complicates the widely held belief that Marvel’s decision to recast was purely a logistical necessity due to expiring contracts. Feige has previously described the studio’s approach to the X-Men as a broader creative “reset” linked to the events of ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ rather than a straightforward reboot driven by contract negotiations.
Feige has consistently avoided using the term “reboot” to describe this transition, instead referring to it as a reset that involves collapsing the Marvel multiverse into a single timeline. This aligns with the 2015 comic storyline “Secret Wars,” which similarly dealt with the destruction and rebuilding of the Marvel multiverse, providing a narrative basis for introducing new actors into these iconic roles.
Several members of the original Fox-era X-Men cast, including Stewart, McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, Marsden, and Kelsey Grammer, are set to appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ this December, offering longtime fans a final farewell before the franchise transitions to a new cast. The upcoming ‘X-Men’ reboot, directed by Jake Schreier and scheduled for release on May 5, 2028, will feature an entirely new ensemble, including Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister.
Feige’s comments about certain actors remaining “attached for much longer than 2025” suggest that some original X-Men performers could still play a role in Marvel’s plans beyond ‘Doomsday,’ even as the main cast shifts to new faces. The specifics of which actors this includes or how they might continue to appear remain unclear based on Feige’s remarks.
This ambiguity fits into Marvel’s broader strategy of keeping its long-term plans intentionally vague, even as Feige has become more open about the franchise’s direction in recent interviews. He has hinted that Marvel is considering plans that extend well beyond a single X-Men trilogy, envisioning “sagas upon sagas” of untapped mutant storylines yet to be adapted.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to release in December and the fully rebooted ‘X-Men’ not arriving until 2028, fans have ample time to speculate on how, or if, any original cast members might reappear in Marvel’s new mutant era. For now, Feige’s comments indicate that the transition is driven more by creative vision than mere contract logistics.
