Small-town murder mysteries typically don’t serve as gateways to a franchise’s most significant superhero, but HBO’s latest DC series has been subtly crafting that connection since its inception. What began as a seemingly insignificant line in the premiere has evolved into one of the show’s most captivating ongoing narratives.

‘Lanterns’ centers on veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart as they delve into a mysterious incident in Rushville, Nebraska, leading them deeper into a cosmic conspiracy. Alongside this central mystery, Sheriff Kerry Kane, portrayed by Kelly Macdonald, has emerged as a character with far more complexity than her small-town badge initially suggested.

This suspicion was confirmed in Episode 2, “Trust Fall,” when it was revealed that Sheriff Kerry is actually from Gotham City, not Rushville. Given Gotham’s pivotal role in Batman lore, any mention of the city carries significant implications for DC fans, and this revelation has sparked a flurry of theories regarding the depth of Kerry’s connection to the Bat-Family.

Astute viewers may have noticed hints of this connection before Episode 2 confirmed it. In the premiere, John Stewart visits Kerry in her office while she wraps up a phone call, and after stating she can’t comment on an active investigation, she signs off with, “Tell Barb I said hey.”

This seemingly minor detail ignited immediate speculation among Batman enthusiasts, who recognized that both the daughter and wife of Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon are named Barbara, with the daughter ultimately becoming the hero Batgirl. Episode 2 built on this earlier tease, with Hal responding to Kerry’s Gotham revelation by saying, “Well, that sounds like a story,” to which Kerry simply replies, “Doesn’t it,” before Hal presses on, “That’s all I’m gonna get? I’ll take it for now.”

The phrasing “for now” has fans convinced that there’s much more to uncover about Kerry’s background as the season unfolds. The show has intentionally left the door open rather than fully explaining her Gotham ties in one conversation, indicating that this thread is being developed into something larger rather than serving as a mere one-off reference.

In addition to the Gotham revelation, fans have also focused on another detail that fuels speculation: Kerry’s surname. Sheriff Kerry Kane shares her last name with one of Gotham City’s oldest and most notable families in DC Comics, directly linked to Kate Kane, the hero known as Batwoman.

This naming choice has led to a growing theory that Sheriff Kerry could be related to Kate Kane, allowing ‘Lanterns’ to intertwine Batman’s world into its narrative without needing to feature the Caped Crusader directly. Given the ongoing uncertainty and reported delays surrounding DC Studios’ live-action Batman project, “Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” incorporating a character like Kerry to establish connections with Gotham offers a clever workaround for introducing that segment of the DC Universe ahead of schedule.

Additional dialogue in the episode has further strengthened this theory. At one point, Kerry states, “I can’t do this again,” while discussing jurisdictional questions, a line some fans interpret as hinting at her previous experiences with Gotham’s law enforcement or vigilante activities.

With Sinestro’s live-action debut confirmed in the same episode and the show’s Manhunter mystery continuing to unfold, Kerry’s Gotham ties exemplify how ‘Lanterns’ uses its grounded, small-town setting to subtly connect to larger aspects of James Gunn’s DC Universe. Whether this thread will eventually lead to a direct Batman reveal, a Batwoman connection, or something entirely different remains to be seen as the season progresses.

Given how meticulously DC Studios has connected its projects so far, from Guy Gardner’s recurring appearances across multiple properties to Sinestro’s reintroduction after a fifteen-year live-action absence, it wouldn’t be surprising if Kerry’s backstory eventually culminates in a significant payoff. With ‘Lanterns’ continuing its weekly rollout on HBO and HBO Max, fans won’t have to wait long to discover just how deep Sheriff Kerry’s ties to Gotham truly run.
