‘VisionQuest’ Star James Spader Reveals Ultron Has Been Trapped in Vision’s Mind Since ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ and He’s Been Busy
Marvel villains often don’t get the chance for a proper comeback, especially those whose endings seemed as final as Ultron’s back in 2015. However, over a decade after his apparent demise, one of the MCU’s most iconic antagonists is set to make a surprising return.
James Spader is reprising his role as Ultron in Marvel Television’s upcoming series ‘VisionQuest,’ marking his first appearance as the character since ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron.’ This series serves as the final chapter in the television trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued through ‘Agatha All Along,’ featuring Paul Bettany’s Vision as he navigates a fractured mental landscape filled with various AI personalities from his past.
It turns out that Ultron has secretly been residing in this landscape all along. Spader confirmed this twist, revealing that Ultron has effectively been trapped inside Vision’s mind since their climactic battle at the end of ‘Age of Ultron,’ rather than being destroyed as many fans believed.
“He’s had access to the internet, television, history and he’s just been consuming and he’s been painting,” Spader shared in an interview with Fandango, explaining how Ultron has spent the last decade confined but far from idle, absorbing information and developing new interests while existing within Vision’s programming.
This revelation confirms long-held fan speculation regarding Ultron’s ambiguous fate. At the end of ‘Age of Ultron,’ Vision confronts the last robotic body containing Ultron’s consciousness, but the destruction occurs off-screen, leaving only a flash of light. This deliberate ambiguity has allowed for exactly this kind of return.
Instead of being completely erased, it appears that Vision absorbed Ultron into his programming through the Mind Stone, keeping him in a contained, non-threatening state rather than eliminating him entirely. Showrunner Terry Matalas has previously described Ultron’s return as happening in an “amazing, unique way,” with the character appearing in both robotic and human forms throughout the series, and the dynamic between Vision and Ultron serving as a key relationship driving the narrative.
Ultron’s return also marks a significant moment for Spader, as he has rarely stepped away from his other major television role. This will be his first non-‘Blacklist’ role in eleven years and his first non-‘Blacklist’ television appearance in thirteen years, following the conclusion of the long-running NBC crime drama in 2023.
In ‘VisionQuest,’ Spader portrays the character in a notably different manner than his original performance-capture-heavy role, appearing both as the voice of Ultron’s robotic presence and in a human avatar that interacts directly with Vision within his mind. Marvel revealed the character’s redesigned human look at D23 on August 15, showcasing Spader with gray hair, a beard, and glasses, a striking departure from the character’s original menacing robotic design.
The series follows Bettany’s Vision as he attempts to piece together the reality of his fragmented past, including his estranged relationship with Wanda Maximoff and his potential connection to a now-grown son named Tommy, played by Ruaridh Mollica. The discovery that Ultron has been quietly living—and apparently painting—inside his mind for over a decade adds a new layer of complexity to Vision’s already tangled emotional journey.
With ‘VisionQuest’ premiering on October 14 on Disney+ as an eight-episode limited series, fans will finally witness how Vision confronts his creator’s unexpected survival and what Ultron has been planning during his quiet time spent consuming culture and creating art from behind Vision’s mental firewall.
