James Gunn Addresses ‘The Brave and the Bold’ Delay Rumors With Direct Response
The DCU has been gaining momentum since ‘Superman’ launched James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revamped universe. However, the ongoing corporate drama surrounding Warner Bros. Discovery has cast uncertainty over future projects. With Paramount Skydance’s attempt to acquire WBD still mired in legal issues, fans have been eagerly analyzing every piece of news for insights into how the deal might impact DC Studios’ plans.
This uncertainty peaked over the weekend when rumors began circulating that one of the studio’s most awaited projects, ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold,’ had hit a snag. The speculation originated from filmmaker and columnist Dan Marcus, who claimed on X that he heard from director Andy Muschietti that all work on the film was paused until the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger was resolved.
Marcus was cautious to present it as unverified, even admitting he believed the information was likely false as he shared it. Muschietti has not publicly commented on the report. Nonetheless, the rumor spread quickly, prompting fans to reach out to James Gunn directly, who responded without hesitation. Gunn stated that the notion didn’t align with what Muschietti would say and clarified that the project is not on hold.

Gunn went further when another fan inquired specifically about whether any DCU projects were delayed due to the pending merger. He provided an even more straightforward answer, asserting that nothing in the slate is currently inactive. This was a rare moment of Gunn tackling merger speculation directly, rather than allowing the rumors to linger.
The rumor didn’t arise in isolation. Paramount Skydance’s bid to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery for $110 billion remains entangled in an antitrust battle, with California Attorney General Rob Bonta and eleven other states attempting to block the deal. A trial is scheduled for March 2027, meaning the corporate uncertainty surrounding WBD, and consequently DC Studios, is likely to persist for some time.
This prolonged timeline has understandably made fans anxious about the future of DC’s slate, particularly regarding a Batman project that has already encountered challenges. ‘The Brave and the Bold’ was introduced as part of Gunn and Safran’s Chapter One lineup, drawing inspiration from Grant Morrison’s acclaimed run and set to introduce Damian Wayne alongside a new interpretation of Bruce Wayne.
In contrast to ‘Superman,’ which has a confirmed sequel titled ‘Man of Tomorrow’ scheduled for release in 2027, updates on the Batman film have been sparse, leaving ample room for speculation to fill the void.
Some reports suggest that Muschietti himself may not know if he will ultimately direct the film until the broader merger question is resolved, even if he isn’t particularly concerned about the outcome. Large merger agreements often impose restrictions on how far a company can commit to new long-term deals while a sale is pending, which has only fueled the perception that Warner Bros. might be exercising caution in granting major greenlights until ownership is finalized.
For now, however, Gunn’s remarks provide a clear indication that DC Studios is not hitting the brakes. With ‘Lanterns’ currently expanding the DCU on HBO and other projects like ‘The People v. Gorilla Grodd’ reportedly moving toward production, the studio seems determined to move forward regardless of how the Paramount-Warner Bros. situation ultimately unfolds.
Whether this momentum will continue once the merger trial begins remains uncertain, but for the time being, Gunn appears focused on controlling the narrative rather than allowing rumors to dictate the conversation.
