Lionsgate’s Immersive ‘Fall 2: Deadpoint’ Screening Challenges Audiences to Stand on a Ledge
Movie marketing has evolved into a more immersive experience in recent years, with studios embracing stunts that transform a simple screening into an engaging event. Horror franchises, in particular, have adopted this trend, utilizing elaborate activations to draw audiences closer to the fear their films portray.
Lionsgate has taken this approach to new heights with its promotion for ‘Fall 2: Deadpoint,’ the sequel to the studio’s 2022 survival thriller that became a surprising streaming success. Ahead of the film’s theatrical release, the studio determined that a conventional press screening would not suffice.
On Saturday, Aug 22, Lionsgate hosted two immersive screenings of ‘Fall 2: Deadpoint’ in Los Angeles, where attendees were not offered the comfort of traditional theater seating. Instead, moviegoers were required to stand on elevated wooden platforms for the entire duration of the film, testing their balance and endurance as the tension on screen escalated. The rule was straightforward: remain on the ledge until the credits rolled.
This stunt was crafted to closely mirror the film’s central premise. ‘Fall 2: Deadpoint’ follows Jax Hunter, portrayed by Harriet Slater, and Luce, played by Arsema Thomas, as they undertake a dangerous plank walk across Thailand’s Mount Kwan in honor of Jax’s late sister. When a sudden rockslide leaves them stranded thousands of feet in the air, they find themselves on a narrow plank with no safe escape, and the sequel intensifies the primal fear of falling that contributed to the original film’s success.
Rather than merely inviting the audience to watch characters confront vertigo and exposure, Lionsgate flipped the experience, compelling viewers to feel a version of that vulnerability themselves. The activation shifted from passive viewing to a survival challenge, with attendees essentially competing to see who could remain standing until the very end.
This clever experiential marketing aligns perfectly with the essence of the ‘Fall’ franchise. The original 2022 film centered around characters trapped at dizzying heights with limited options, and translating that anxiety into a physical challenge for real audience members adds a level of authenticity that a standard trailer cannot replicate.
These elevated platform screenings come just before the film’s wide theatrical release, scheduled for Sept 2, 2026. Directed by Peter and Michael Spierig, known for their work on ‘Predestination’ and ‘Jigsaw,’ the sequel was co-written by original ‘Fall’ filmmaker Scott Mann and Jonathan Frank, preserving much of the creative DNA from the first film while expanding its setting.
Tom Brittney joins the film’s principal cast alongside Slater and Thomas, as the production shifts the franchise’s vertigo-inducing set pieces from the isolated radio tower of the first film to the sheer cliff faces and precarious plank walks of Mount Kwan. This larger, more expansive location suggests that Lionsgate is confident the sequel can deliver the same nerve-wracking tension on an even grander scale.
Whether the elevated screening left attendees feeling more excited or traumatized is likely a matter of perspective, but it has certainly generated significant buzz leading up to the release.
