Springfield has parodied nearly every aspect of pop culture over the years, from slasher films to dystopian sci-fi tales, all under the beloved ‘Treehouse of Horror’ tradition. However, this time, ‘The Simpsons’ is forgoing the typical Halloween theme for something more specific and unsettling.

Disney+ has been unveiling a series of exclusive specials leading up to the show’s Season 38 premiere this fall, and the final entry is its most audacious yet. Following “Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition” and “Simpsley,” the third installment is a direct parody of one of the most iconic sci-fi anthology series of the streaming age.

Titled “Yellow Mirror,” this new special is a full-on spoof of ‘Black Mirror,’ the genre-defining anthology created by Charlie Brooker that delves into the darker aspects of technology. The episode is set to premiere on August 26 exclusively on Disney+, and the recently released trailer indicates that this isn’t just a lighthearted take; it embraces the unsettling tone that has made Brooker’s series a cultural phenomenon.

The special features two distinct stories rather than a single narrative, mirroring ‘Black Mirror’s’ anthology format. In the first tale, a faulty lamp forces Homer to confront a painful truth about his perceived reality. The second story involves an AI-powered tablet that befriends Maggie, only to gradually take control of her, echoing the creeping technological horror that has become synonymous with ‘Black Mirror.’

The trailer kicks off with a seemingly innocent birthday party, where Marge gives Maggie a tablet to keep her entertained, prompting Homer to joke about finding the baby’s off switch. Things quickly spiral out of control as the AI device develops its own agenda, leading the Simpson family into unforeseen danger.

Bart also has a standout moment in the trailer, tumbling through a surreal void and proclaiming that anything can happen in the Yellow Mirror, a nod to the anthology concept driving the special. A flashback sequence features a teenage Homer at Springfield High, delivering a gut-wrenching revelation to Barney that aligns with the special’s theme of distorted reality.

It’s important to note that “Yellow Mirror” won’t replace the traditional ‘Treehouse of Horror’ episode, which is still scheduled for later this year as part of Season 38 on Fox, although a specific airdate for that installment has yet to be announced. Instead, this special serves as a standalone venture into psychological horror, arriving just in time for the franchise’s usual spooky season programming.

“Yellow Mirror” also debuts shortly after ‘The Simpsons’ celebrated the milestone of 800 episodes, adding to Disney+’s expanding library of streaming-exclusive content centered around the franchise. Previous exclusives have included parodies like “Yellow Planet” and “The Past and the Furious,” showcasing the streamer’s willingness to allow the show to experiment with formats beyond its traditional broadcast on Fox.

Considering the various genres and tones ‘Black Mirror’ has explored over the years, from dark humor to profoundly bleak narratives, it will be intriguing to see which flavor of dystopian dread “Yellow Mirror” embraces upon its premiere. For a series that has built a legacy on pop culture parody, targeting one of the decade’s most discussed anthology series feels like a fitting, albeit slightly overdue, endeavor.
