‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Breaks Box Office Records Ahead of Theatrical Release
Marvel Studios has been working hard to regain the box office supremacy it once enjoyed before the pandemic altered moviegoing habits. Films like ‘The Marvels’ and ‘Thunderbolts’ have struggled to achieve the impressive numbers the studio previously took for granted, leading fans and analysts to question if the MCU could ever return to its former glory.
That question is beginning to find its answer in a significant way. With the Russo Brothers back in the director’s chair and both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans returning for one last adventure, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has rapidly become the most eagerly awaited Marvel release in years, and the numbers coming in are supporting that excitement in an unprecedented manner.
According to Collider, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is now officially projected to achieve a $300 million opening weekend, driven by a pre-sale surge unlike anything the box office has ever witnessed. The film has already amassed $35 million in advance ticket sales, even though it is still months away from its theatrical debut, marking a milestone that no other film in history has reached this early.
This early momentum began to build steadily throughout the summer. Advance sales first opened alongside the film’s trailer release, generating $16.5 million on the very first day across approximately 1,000 domestic theaters showcasing premium formats exclusively. From there, the momentum only continued to grow, eventually surpassing every previous record for advance ticket sales.
What makes this rollout particularly unique is the timing. Disney launched full advance ticket sales a full four months ahead of release, an unconventional strategy for a studio release of this magnitude, and it seems to be paying off given the intense fan demand surrounding Doctor Doom’s live-action debut.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is projected to earn between $260 million and $300 million in its opening weekend, according to Global Box Office estimates. For context, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ set the modern benchmark back in 2019 with a $357.1 million domestic debut, a record that was only recently surpassed this year by ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s’ impressive $360 million opening.
The film is set to open on December 18, facing off against Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three’ on the same day, a scheduling clash that is already causing tension over premium screen availability. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will not have access to IMAX during that period, as ‘Dune: Part Three’ has secured exclusive rights to the format for three weeks following its release.
Even without IMAX on its side, ‘Doomsday’ has continued to exceed expectations across all other premium formats available. Some trackers have even suggested that the film could earn significantly more than current projections indicate, with early forum estimates from box office analysts speculating an opening weekend as high as $400 million to $450 million domestically, although that remains speculative and well outside official studio tracking.
Given Marvel Studios’ pressing need for a definitive success after a series of disappointing box office returns, the magnitude of this pre-sale surge suggests that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ might finally be the film that delivers it. Whether the movie can live up to the enormous expectations building around it will be revealed once it finally hits theaters in December.
