Woody Harrelson Shares How He Discovered His Dad Might Be Related to Matthew McConaughey
Hollywood friendships can be quite peculiar, and the bond between Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey is no exception. Their relationship has lasted nearly thirty years and includes multiple film collaborations, such as ‘EDtv’ and ‘True Detective.’ Fans have often noted their uncanny chemistry, which extends to their similar mannerisms and matching Texas accents.
In 2023, the two actors playfully suggested they might actually be related, rather than just close friends. What began as a lighthearted theory has gained momentum, fueled by intriguing family details that both actors have neither confirmed nor denied.
Recently, Harrelson opened up about how he first learned of the potential connection between his late father and McConaughey’s mother. In an interview with Variety, published on August 21, Harrelson recounted that Mary Kathlene McConaughey, whom he has known for over twenty-five years and affectionately calls “MaMac,” once told him, “I knew your father,” with a notable pause after the word “knew.”
He found the moment peculiar, especially since she had never mentioned it in their long friendship.
Harrelson mentioned that MaMac was “feeling good” at the time, possibly due to some Kendall-Jackson wine, which may have encouraged her to share the story. The comment sparked curiosity in him about the nature of their relationship, leading him to discover that his father and McConaughey’s mother were more than just friends, hinting at a deeper connection.
This revelation builds on a story McConaughey shared a few years prior. On Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast, he recalled a family trip to Greece where his mother made a similarly suggestive comment to Harrelson, emphasizing that she “knew” his father.
McConaughey noted that the timing was unsettling, as Harrelson’s father, Charles Harrelson, was reportedly on leave during the time his own parents were experiencing their second divorce, which coincides with McConaughey’s conception in 1969. He also mentioned a detail his mother shared, claiming that his father said upon his birth, “that ain’t my son,” and refused to go to the hospital with her.
Despite years of speculation and playful banter, neither Harrelson nor McConaughey has taken a DNA test to clarify their relationship. The mystery has become a recurring theme in their friendship, now spilling into their professional lives as they prepare to star in an Apple TV+ comedy series originally titled “Brother From Another Mother,” now reportedly called “Brothers.” The show features fictionalized versions of themselves navigating a blended family story that McConaughey describes as “based on truth.”
Whether they will ever take that DNA test remains uncertain, but given how much fun they’ve had with the story publicly, some mysteries may be more enjoyable when left unsolved.
