‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Brings New Footage But Most Fans Will Miss It
Marvel Studios has consistently turned theatrical re-releases into major events, and their latest strategy elevates that approach to a new level of exclusivity. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on the horizon as one of the most awaited films in the franchise, Disney is leveraging an unexpected method to build excitement: by bringing ‘Avengers: Endgame’ back to theaters first.
This re-release has been officially dubbed ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ and it comes with more than just a wave of nostalgia. The film is set to return to theaters on September 25, serving as both a celebratory revisit for one of the highest-grossing films ever and a strategic lead-in to December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
The Encore version runs for 185 minutes, making it four minutes longer than the original 181-minute theatrical cut, thus becoming the longest release from Marvel Studios to date. These additional minutes reportedly feature previously unseen footage linked directly to ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ but there’s a notable catch: this new content will only be available in IMAX and the newly introduced Infinity Vision format, meaning it won’t be included in standard theatrical screenings.
Infinity Vision represents a new addition to Marvel’s theatrical offerings, although it isn’t a completely new premium large format technology in the traditional sense. Instead, it acts as a certification standard, ensuring that participating theaters meet specific benchmarks for screen size, sound quality, and projection standards, thus allowing Disney to guarantee a consistent premium experience across locations nationwide.
The timing of this decision is not coincidental. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled to premiere on December 18, coinciding with Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three,’ and IMAX has already committed its screens exclusively to Villeneuve’s film during that release window, leaving Marvel’s own blockbuster without access to the format it has relied on for years.
This scheduling conflict seems to have prompted Disney to introduce Infinity Vision now, using ‘Endgame Encore’ as a low-risk opportunity to familiarize audiences with the new premium label well ahead of December. By debuting the format alongside exclusive bonus footage related to ‘Doomsday,’ Disney is effectively training moviegoers to associate Infinity Vision with essential MCU content before ‘Doomsday’ needs that recognition to compete against ‘Dune: Part Three’s’ IMAX exclusivity.
Speculation regarding the new footage has already sparked excitement among fan communities, with theories ranging from surprise Doctor Doom appearances to unexpected cameos. A more grounded expectation suggests an expanded scene from Tony Stark’s funeral, possibly featuring Steve Rogers and Ant-Man discussing time travel mechanics, along with a new sequence involving Loki during his time with the TVA, plus a special end tag designed to more directly set up the events of ‘Doomsday.’
Tickets for ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ will officially go on sale Tuesday, Aug. 25, giving fans just over a month to secure their seats before the September 25 release date. With ‘Endgame’s’ original theatrical run grossing $2.799 billion worldwide, there’s already buzz about whether this re-release could push the film’s lifetime total past ‘Avatar’s’ $2.923 billion global box office, although that would require generating approximately $124 million from audiences who could simply stream the film on Disney+.
Given the significant expectations Marvel has for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ following a mixed box office performance in recent years, using ‘Endgame Encore’ to subtly test Infinity Vision appears to be a calculated strategy rather than mere nostalgia marketing.
