Marvel Studios has a knack for turning a victory lap into a major event, and this re-release is no exception. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ still months away, the studio is strategically using one of its most cherished films to test new theatrical technology ahead of the winter release.

This week, Marvel Studios officially announced that tickets for ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ are now on sale, inviting fans to “reassemble the team” and experience the film’s original theatrical magic starting September 25. While the messaging heavily leans into nostalgia, the real intrigue lies in the differences of this version.

As reported by Cosmic Book News, the Encore cut runs for 185 minutes, making it four minutes longer than the original 181-minute theatrical release, thus becoming the longest Marvel Studios film to date. Those additional minutes reportedly feature previously unseen footage directly linked to ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ but there’s a catch: this new material will only be available in IMAX and the newly introduced Infinity Vision format, meaning standard screenings will not include it.

Infinity Vision is a new addition to Marvel’s theatrical offerings, functioning more as a certification standard than a traditional premium screening format. It ensures that participating theaters meet strict criteria for screen size, sound quality, and projection standards, allowing Disney to provide a consistent premium experience across various locations nationwide.

The timing of Infinity Vision’s launch is strategic. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to debut on December 18, coinciding with Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which has already secured IMAX screens for that release window. This scheduling conflict seems to have prompted Disney to roll out Infinity Vision now, using ‘Endgame Encore’ as a low-risk opportunity to introduce audiences to the new premium format.

By pairing the format’s debut with exclusive ‘Doomsday’ footage, Disney is effectively training moviegoers to associate Infinity Vision with essential MCU content before ‘Doomsday’ needs that recognition to compete for premium screens against ‘Dune: Part Three’s’ IMAX exclusivity.

Speculation about the new footage has been rampant since the announcement, with theories ranging from surprise Doctor Doom appearances to unexpected cameos. More grounded expectations suggest an expanded scene from Tony Stark’s funeral, potentially featuring Steve Rogers and Ant-Man discussing time travel, along with a new sequence involving Loki during his TVA tenure, plus a special end tag designed to bridge into ‘Doomsday’s’ narrative.

Having grossed $2.799 billion worldwide during its original run, there’s already buzz about whether this re-release could push the film’s lifetime total past ‘Avatar’s’ $2.923 billion global record. However, achieving that would require generating around $124 million from audiences who could easily stream the film on Disney+. The more realistic goal for Marvel seems to be building genuine hype and recognition for the new format ahead of their biggest release of the year.

With so much at stake for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ following a mixed box office performance for Marvel Studios, using ‘Endgame Encore’ to softly launch Infinity Vision appears to be a calculated strategic move rather than mere nostalgia marketing.
