‘The Love Hypothesis’ Trailer Reveals Prime Video’s Upcoming Bookish Romance
Ali Hazelwood has established herself as a leading voice in contemporary romance fiction, thanks to her strong STEM heroines and the slow-burn academic tension that captivates readers. Her breakout novel, ‘The Love Hypothesis’, is finally making its way to the screen, fulfilling the long-awaited dreams of fans. The book dominated bestseller lists after its release in 2021, and its film adaptation has become one of the most eagerly awaited projects in the romance genre.
This week, excitement surged with the release of a new trailer, following an earlier teaser that premiered at Prime Video’s inaugural Obsessed Fest in Los Angeles back in June. The streaming service utilized this event, part of its new Obsession Is In Session initiative that celebrates fandom culture, to provide fans with their first glimpse of the film.
Lili Reinhart stars as Olive Smith, a brilliant Ph.D. candidate whose academic life is turned upside down when she impulsively kisses Adam Carlsen, portrayed by Tom Bateman, the campus’s notoriously intimidating professor. What starts as a spontaneous act to convince her best friend Ahn, played by Rachel Marsh, that she has moved on from her crush Jeremy, played by Nicholas Duvernay, quickly spirals into a complicated situation neither Olive nor Adam anticipated.
The new trailer embraces this premise with a playful, science-themed approach. It opens like an old-school instructional film, featuring a narrator who explains how molecules are in constant motion, colliding and vibrating until they find a match, using this metaphor to represent Olive and Adam’s unexpected chemistry. That kiss, witnessed by Ahn from afar, sets their carefully arranged fake relationship into motion, complete with rules and boundaries that both characters insist are strictly professional.
Of course, maintaining that professional distance proves challenging. Earlier footage from the trailer shows Adam cautioning Olive mid-scheme that her friends are watching from the balcony, making a kiss strategically necessary—a moment that captures the push-and-pull dynamic fans of Hazelwood’s work have come to expect.
Claire Scanlon, known for directing ‘Set It Up’ and ‘The People We Hate at the Wedding,’ directs this adaptation, with a screenplay penned by Sarah Rothschild. The supporting cast includes Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan, with production managed by MRC and the Cantillon Company, and Elizabeth Cantillon serving as producer.
In conjunction with the trailer, Prime Video also revealed new artwork for a movie tie-in edition of Hazelwood’s original novel, showcasing Reinhart and Bateman as Olive and Adam on the updated cover. This marketing effort aims to attract both long-time fans of the book and newcomers who will discover the story through the film.
With the buzz surrounding Hazelwood’s novels across BookTok and romance reading communities, expectations for this adaptation are soaring, particularly regarding whether Reinhart and Bateman can capture the chemistry that made Olive and Adam’s relationship so beloved in the book. Early reactions to the teaser indicate that fans are cautiously optimistic, although some have debated whether Bateman fully embodies the intimidating professor persona that readers envisioned.
‘The Love Hypothesis’ will be available for streaming globally on Prime Video starting September 23, giving fans of the novel just a few weeks to see if this adaptation lives up to the romance that propelled Hazelwood to bestseller status.
