James Bond Shortlist Narrows to Six Actors with Unknown Frontrunner
The quest for the next James Bond has been ongoing for years, fueled by a constant stream of betting odds, social media buzz, and speculation about who will take over from Daniel Craig. With Amazon MGM Studios and director Denis Villeneuve now at the helm of the franchise, fans are eager for tangible developments rather than mere rumors.
It seems that progress is finally on the horizon. According to Page Six, six actors are scheduled to screen-test for the iconic role in early September, marking the clearest path yet toward selecting a new 007.
The shortlist includes Jack Barton, Callum Turner, Jack Lowden, Jacob Elordi, Paul Mescal, and Harris Dickinson. The decision-making process reportedly involves Villeneuve, longtime Eon Productions producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, along with screenwriter Steven Knight. While most of these names have been part of Bond casting discussions for some time, one name has surprised many.
Jack Barton, a relatively unknown actor whose most notable role is in ‘Poor Things,’ is reportedly the frontrunner for the coveted part. Casting director Nina Gold has been on the lookout for lesser-known talent across the UK, and insiders have started referring to Barton as “The One” internally.
Barton’s experience beyond ‘Poor Things’ is modest, featuring roles in British television series such as Steven Knight’s ‘SAS: Rogue Heroes’ and Netflix’s ‘Heartstopper.’ His relative anonymity could actually work to his advantage, as it has historically been challenging for more famous actors to shake off their established personas when cast as Bond.
The rest of the shortlist boasts considerable star power. Turner and Lowden have reportedly gained significant momentum in recent weeks, while Elordi and Dickinson have remained consistent names in the broader casting conversation. Mescal continues to be a strong contender as well.
Elordi has gained traction in recent years with roles in ‘Euphoria,’ ‘Priscilla,’ and ‘Saltburn,’ while Mescal rose to fame with ‘Normal People’ and received an Oscar nomination for ‘Aftersun’ before stepping into blockbuster territory with ‘Gladiator II.’ Dickinson has also built an eclectic portfolio with projects like ‘Triangle of Sadness,’ ‘The Iron Claw,’ ‘Babygirl,’ and Steve McQueen’s ‘Blitz.’
One notable absence from the official shortlist is Jack O’Connell, known for ‘Sinners’ and ’28 Years Later.’ His continued presence in industry discussions suggests that the casting field may be more fluid than the six confirmed names indicate.
With actual screen tests scheduled for early September, the long-running guessing game appears to be nearing its conclusion. Whether Barton’s underdog status will prevail once the cameras start rolling, or if one of the more established actors will rise to the occasion during testing, will likely become clearer in the coming weeks.
