The ‘Insidious‘ franchise has quietly established itself as one of horror’s most reliable moneymakers over the past 16 years, consistently delivering hits on modest budgets. Fans eagerly anticipate each new installment, but the sixth film almost didn’t make it to theaters.

Sony had been developing a sixth ‘Insidious’ film as early as 2024, but a shift in studio leadership led to the project being removed from the release schedule. Franchise star Lin Shaye, known for her role as psychic medium Elise Rainier, was not ready to accept this cancellation without a fight.

Shaye’s reaction was straightforward. “Fuck this,” she recalled, prompting her to take action by writing a personal letter to Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman, whom she had met years earlier during the filming of 1998’s ‘There’s Something About Mary.’

In her letter, she urged Rothman to reconsider the decision, emphasizing that the franchise’s loyal fans deserved another installment. “It gives me chills because I don’t consider myself a mover and a shaker,” Shaye shared with Variety, adding that while she doesn’t believe she single-handedly saved the film, she felt it was important to voice her concerns.

Rothman took her words to heart. The project was reinstated, ultimately evolving into ‘Insidious: Out of the Further,’ directed by Jacob Chase, which premiered in theaters on August 21. This installment shifts the narrative focus from the Lambert family to Gemma Hall, a young mother who discovers her ability to traverse the dimension known as the Further and bring its demons into the real world.

This bold move has proven successful. The film achieved a remarkable $60,300,000 global opening weekend, marking the largest worldwide debut for any film released in August 2026, according to Deadline’s box office reports.

Domestically, ‘Out of the Further’ earned $25,300,000, making it the third-largest opening weekend in the franchise’s history, following ‘Insidious: The Red Door’ and 2013’s ‘Insidious: Chapter 2.’ With a production budget of just $18,000,000, the film has already turned a profit for Sony, Screen Gems, and Blumhouse.

The successful opening weekend also pushed the franchise’s lifetime worldwide total past $800,000,000 across all six films, a significant achievement for a series that thrives on cost-effective horror rather than big-budget spectacle. This success came even in the absence of franchise staples Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, who did not participate in this installment.

At 82 years old, Shaye has made it clear that she is not ready to retire from her role as Elise Rainier, previously dispelling retirement rumors on social media by stating that the franchise is “just getting started.” Given the strong performance of ‘Out of the Further,’ with 23 markets setting new franchise opening records according to Deadline, it seems likely that audiences will get more from this beloved series.

For an actress who has often felt overlooked in her long career, Shaye’s determination to advocate for this film exemplifies the persistence that has kept the ‘Insidious’ franchise thriving for over 15 years.
