Netflix’s ‘Unabomber’ Trailer Reveals Jacob Tremblay’s Transformation Release Date Announced
Hollywood has revisited the Unabomber narrative previously, from the 2017 miniseries ‘Manhunt: Unabomber’ to the 2020 docuseries ‘Unabomber: In His Own Words.’ However, Netflix’s latest adaptation approaches the infamous case from a fresh perspective. Instead of focusing solely on the manhunt, this version delves into the psychological roots of how a gifted teenager evolved into one of America’s most infamous domestic terrorists.
This origin story is central to ‘Unabomber,’ a true-crime drama directed by Janus Metz that traces Ted Kaczynski’s journey from a 16-year-old Harvard prodigy to the mastermind behind a bombing campaign that resulted in 3 fatalities and 23 injuries over nearly two decades. The film intertwines two timelines, exploring Kaczynski’s formative years at Harvard alongside the FBI investigation that ultimately led to his capture.
Netflix has unveiled the first full trailer for the film, offering viewers their clearest glimpse yet at Jacob Tremblay’s transformation into the young Kaczynski, with Russell Crowe portraying the controversial Harvard psychologist whose experiments influenced his early life. The trailer begins with the shock of a 1994 mail bombing before flashing back to Kaczynski’s early days as a mathematics prodigy at Harvard.
Tremblay portrays Kaczynski during his time at Harvard, where he becomes involved in psychological experiments led by Professor Henry Murray, played by Crowe, under the pretense of an academic philosophy club. Metz has described Kaczynski as someone who becomes increasingly disillusioned with society and ultimately resorts to violence as a means of revenge, with the film alternating between his radicalization and the FBI’s pursuit of him decades later.
Tremblay has shared his approach to avoiding caricature in this role, emphasizing his desire for Kaczynski to come across as genuinely human rather than a mere villain. He drew from his own experiences of entering a professional setting at a young age and feeling out of place among older colleagues, which helped him connect with Kaczynski’s early feelings of isolation.
Shailene Woodley completes the film’s central trio as Joanne Miller, a fictional FBI agent leading the 1990s manhunt who utilizes Kaczynski’s own manifesto as a crucial tool in tracking him down. Annabelle Wallis also stars as Christiana Morgan, Murray’s academic partner and co-director of the Harvard Psychological Clinic where the real-life experiments occurred, alongside Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg, and Marc Menchaca.
Metz has stated that he recognized Tremblay was perfect for the role after witnessing his performance in 2025’s ‘Sovereign,’ describing him as a rare talent capable of conveying Kaczynski’s psychological unraveling. The screenplay is penned by Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves, both of whom have experience with ‘Sleepy Hollow,’ with Sophie Cassidy producing for 2.0 Entertainment in collaboration with MRC.
‘Unabomber’ arrives amidst a broader trend of true-crime storytelling that continues to thrive on streaming platforms. However, its dual-timeline structure and focus on Kaczynski’s psychological development distinguish it from previous adaptations of the same story. With such a talented ensemble and a director dedicated to exploring the human complexity behind a notorious historical figure, the film is set to ignite considerable discussion upon its release.
‘Unabomber’ premieres on Netflix on September 25.
