Prime Video Greenlights Six-Part Series Based on Stephen King’s ‘Crouch End’
Stephen King’s works have been rapidly taking over streaming platforms, with new adaptations announced almost weekly across major services. This trend continues with a fresh project that brings King’s storytelling to a unique location fans haven’t seen explored in quite this way before.
Prime Video is once again delving into the horror master’s catalog, this time selecting one of his lesser-known stories. This project signifies a notable milestone for King’s expanding presence on television, focusing on a narrative that stands out in his extensive bibliography for a specific reason.
Prime Video has officially greenlit ‘Crouch End’ as a six-part limited series, based on King’s short story of the same name. This adaptation marks the first time a King story will be produced in the UK. The tale holds a unique place in King’s oeuvre, as it is the only story he has set in London, named after the real North London district where the plot unfolds.
The official synopsis hints at a gripping supernatural mystery: when global movie star Doris Freeman rushes into a London police station claiming that strange occurrences are linked to her husband’s disappearance, police inspector Ted Vetter must uncover whether she is telling the truth, if she could be a murderer, or if something far more sinister is at play.
Paul Tomalin, known for his work on ‘Bodies,’ is adapting the story for the series, while Tom Shankland, the director of the 2008 horror film ‘The Children,’ will lead the project. Both creatives have expressed genuine enthusiasm for bringing King’s narrative to life, with Tomalin noting that the source material has haunted his dreams since he first encountered it years ago.
Shankland echoed that excitement, identifying himself as a lifelong Stephen King fan and assuring that the adaptation will be cinematic, original, and thought-provoking. The series is produced by Mammoth Screen and Fifth Season, with Tomalin, Shankland, Damien Timmer, Rebecca Keane, and Ben Irving serving as executive producers.
Originally published in 1980 as part of an anthology titled ‘New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos,’ ‘Crouch End’ carries distinct Lovecraftian influences that differentiate it tonally from much of King’s more grounded writing. The story later appeared in his 1993 collection ‘Nightmares & Dreamscapes’ and was previously adapted for television in TNT’s 2006 anthology series based on that same collection.
This new adaptation joins a rapidly expanding array of King adaptations currently in various stages of development, including a fresh take on ‘Desperation,’ the second season of ‘Welcome to Derry,’ an adaptation titled ‘Mister Yummy,’ Mike Flanagan’s version of ‘The Mist,’ and a new interpretation of ‘The Dark Tower.’ The series also fits into Prime Video’s growing lineup of UK originals, alongside recently announced titles like ‘Dirty’ and ‘The Boys of Tommen,’ as well as existing shows such as ‘Clarkson’s Farm’ and ‘The Girlfriend.’
As King’s influence on television continues to expand seemingly every week, ‘Crouch End’ stands out as a truly distinctive entry, bringing his unique brand of cosmic dread to a specific and very real part of London.
