‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Unveils New ScreenX Footage Ahead of December Release
‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has been navigating a complex theatrical rollout, creatively adapting to premium formats after losing a significant release advantage. As the film approaches its December release date, Disney and Marvel are exploring unconventional solutions to enhance the viewing experience.
Currently, the film will not be available in IMAX theaters in the United States for its first three weeks due to ‘Dune: Part Three’ claiming exclusive domestic IMAX rights. Instead of contesting this limitation, Marvel is focusing on a variety of alternative premium formats to ensure audiences enjoy an immersive theatrical experience.
This strategy now includes ScreenX, with new footage showcasing how ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will appear in this unique panoramic format. The clip highlights the difference between a standard 2.39:1 screen presentation and the ScreenX version, which expands the film’s visuals across the auditorium’s side walls for a captivating 270-degree viewing experience.
ScreenX utilizes ceiling-mounted projectors to display digital extensions of scenes onto the theater’s side walls, drawing action that would typically be out of view into the audience’s peripheral vision. Marvel previously experimented with this technique in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which was the first MCU film specifically designed for ScreenX auditoriums, according to CJ 4DPLEX, the technology’s creator.
Additionally, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is being marketed under Disney’s new “Infinity Vision” certification, which ensures premium large format theaters provide big screens, vibrant images, and excellent sound quality without introducing new technology. This certification was launched ahead of the September re-release of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and is now part of ‘Doomsday’s’ promotional strategy.
In addition to ScreenX and Infinity Vision, formats like 4DX and RPX have been available for ticket sales since July 20, offering audiences various ways to experience the film based on local availability. General ticket sales for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ began on August 14, approximately four months before the film’s release.
The film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, with a reported runtime of 165 minutes, although Marvel has noted this may change. Preview screenings are anticipated to start the evening prior, on December 17, providing fans their first glimpse of the culmination of a narrative that has been developing since ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
While IMAX will not be available domestically during the crucial opening weeks, some international markets will still offer the film in that format. Disney has also created an official finder tool to help audiences locate certified Infinity Vision theaters nearby, with the flagship location being Disney’s El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood.
With numerous premium format options vying for attention ahead of its release, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to demonstrate that missing out on IMAX does not mean sacrificing spectacle.
