‘Grand Theft Auto‘ has long regarded Miami as one of its most cherished inspirations, and with the sixth installment on the horizon, this relationship is set to become remarkably tangible. Rockstar Games is reportedly preparing to bring Vice City into the real world, rather than simply referencing it from afar.

The upcoming game will return players to Vice City, Rockstar’s fictionalized version of Miami that first captured hearts in 2002’s ‘Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.’ This time, the developer is not satisfied with just recreating the city’s look on screen; they have initiated discussions with local government to physically alter parts of Miami itself.

According to a report from The Miamian, Rockstar Games is in talks with Miami-Dade County officials to re-theme actual Miami locations with Vice City branding as part of the marketing strategy for the game’s November launch. The proposed changes reportedly include Vice City signage and logos at Miami International Airport, throughout downtown Miami, and at various other significant locations across the county.

At the airport, the proposal envisions an immersive arrival experience that aims to immediately link Miami with Vice City. This concept includes an aircraft wrapped entirely in Vice City branding, a themed baggage claim area, customized carousel and column wraps, branded luggage carts, limited-edition luggage tags, and coordinated Vice City signage during the launch period.

Downtown Miami would also see its own transformation under the proposal, featuring Metromover cars wrapped in Vice City colors and logos, along with Vice City signage installed at Metromover and Metrorail stations across key areas. This level of citywide integration would represent an unusually ambitious marketing collaboration between a video game publisher and local government infrastructure.

It’s important to note that none of these concepts have been officially approved yet, and county officials have indicated that the proposals would need further feasibility analysis before proceeding. The pitch deck was obtained through a public records request that reportedly required significant effort to secure.

This hyper-localized marketing approach aligns with Rockstar’s broader strategy for the game’s rollout. CEO Strauss Zelnick has previously stated that the marketing campaign for this installment would differ significantly from the approach taken for ‘Grand Theft Auto V,’ whose promotional cycle spanned nearly two years from its first trailer to its eventual release.

The connection between Vice City and Miami is deeply rooted in the franchise’s fictional geography, with the game’s surrounding area named Vice-Dale County, a clear nod to the real Miami-Dade County that encompasses the city. Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser has previously cited ‘Scarface,’ ‘Miami Vice,’ and the studio’s own memories of the 1980s as key inspirations behind the original Vice City concept.

If these county proposals advance, Miami residents and visitors could soon find themselves navigating a blurred line between the real city and Rockstar’s fictional version, just in time for the game’s launch this November.
