‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Expected to Receive One Oscar Nomination
Marvel’s relationship with the Academy Awards has always been complex. Despite a history of blockbuster success and critical acclaim for individual performances, the MCU’s representation at the Oscars has largely been confined to technical categories, with acting and directing nominations remaining scarce throughout the franchise’s nearly two-decade history.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ debuted this summer as one of the year’s most significant theatrical releases, marking Tom Holland’s fourth solo venture as Peter Parker and the 38th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie has garnered praise for its emotionally resonant portrayal of the character, reportedly grounding Peter both literally and figuratively as his powers undergo an unexpected transformation.
Despite this acclaim, early forecasts indicate that the film’s awards season prospects are modest. According to Variety’s 2027 Oscar predictions list, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is anticipated to secure just one nomination, likely in the Best Visual Effects category, where it will compete against heavyweights like ‘Dune: Part Three,’ ‘Godzilla Minus Zero,’ ‘The Odyssey,’ and ‘Project Hail Mary.’
This modest outlook aligns with a long-standing trend for the web-slinger at the Academy Awards. Sam Raimi’s original 2002 film received nominations in Sound and Visual Effects, while its 2004 sequel won in Visual Effects and garnered additional nominations for Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. However, following that peak, the franchise experienced a lengthy dry spell, with ‘Spider-Man 3,’ both ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ films, and Holland’s own ‘Homecoming’ and ‘Far From Home’ failing to receive any nominations.
Things changed with ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ in 2021, which broke through with a Visual Effects nomination but ultimately lost to ‘Dune.’ Now, ‘Brand New Day’ finds itself vying for that same solitary nomination in a particularly crowded field this season, which also includes the fellow MCU release ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’

Much of the excitement surrounding the film’s technical achievements focuses on its combination of large-scale spectacle and practical execution. Analysts have highlighted the film’s use of practical stunt work enhanced with digital effects as a significant advantage, particularly in scenes involving the Hulk, aerial combat, and Sadie Sink’s enigmatic character, which contribute to the film’s visual diversity.
However, competition in the Visual Effects category remains fierce, and the branch has a history of overlooking blockbuster contenders that do not fully meet its standards. Whether ‘Brand New Day’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ can both secure spots among the final five nominees is one of the more intriguing aspects of this year’s predictions, especially considering how rarely two films from the same franchise compete in the same category during a single awards cycle.
Beyond the technical race, the film’s production design has also attracted attention, with Marvel veteran Charles Wood credited for its comic-accurate, vividly colored recreation of New York City’s street-level environment. This detail could provide the film with a slight chance of expanding its nominations beyond visual effects and sound categories, although early forecasts suggest nothing beyond Visual Effects is currently a serious contender.
For a franchise that has historically struggled to gain traction during awards season, even a single nomination would keep ‘Brand New Day’ in line with its predecessors’ records. It serves as a reminder that box office success and awards recognition rarely align, particularly for a genre that the Academy has traditionally kept at a distance outside of technical categories.
That being said, early predictions are far from definitive, and campaigns, guild wins, and evolving industry buzz can significantly alter a film’s chances between now and nomination day. If ‘Brand New Day’ can build momentum in other technical categories, especially sound or production design, its final nomination tally could look quite different from the current outlook.
