‘Lanterns’ Episode 3 First Look: New Stills Preview This Sunday’s HBO Release
HBO has consistently approached superhero television with a focus on substance over spectacle, and ‘Lanterns’ has embraced this philosophy since its premiere. The series opts for a grounded detective drama vibe, prioritizing a slow-burn mystery over flashy superhero antics, all set against the backdrop of the American heartland.
This unique tonal direction has established ‘Lanterns’ as a standout addition to the expanding DC Universe under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Aaron Pierre portrays rookie Green Lantern John Stewart, who teams up with Kyle Chandler’s experienced Hal Jordan. Together, they delve into a murder investigation that reveals unsettling truths.
Recently released stills from Episode 3 offer fans their best glimpse yet of what lies ahead. This new episode is scheduled to air this Sunday on HBO and HBO Max, continuing the show’s weekly Sunday night rollout that began with its August 16 debut.
The latest images showcase the show’s ensemble cast, including Kelly Macdonald, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Jason Ritter, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Laura Linney, alongside leads Pierre and Chandler. This diverse cast highlights the importance of the supporting characters as ‘Lanterns’ explores its mystery-of-the-week format intertwined with a larger cosmic narrative.
The series has brought together various directors throughout its eight-episode run, with Slow Horses director James Hawes directing the first two episodes. Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov are set to direct additional episodes, providing visual diversity while showrunner Chris Mundy maintains the overarching narrative.
Created by Mundy in collaboration with Damon Lindelof and Tom King, ‘Lanterns’ draws inspiration from acclaimed detective dramas, often likened to ‘True Detective.’ With eight episodes planned, the season is set to conclude with its finale on October 4.

Despite the show’s early acclaim, HBO has yet to confirm a second season. Mundy recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s future, revealing that he and his team have begun brainstorming ideas for a potential follow-up season, although they are still in the early stages of development.
Mundy indicated that the writers are currently mapping out the broad strokes of a possible Season 2 storyline, noting they are approximately six weeks into the process. He emphasized that any renewal will depend on audience reception, expressing hope for a second season while acknowledging that the show’s future ultimately hinges on viewer response.
As anticipation builds for this Sunday’s Episode 3, viewers can expect Stewart and Jordan’s partnership to delve deeper into the central mystery. With five more episodes remaining in the season, ‘Lanterns’ has ample opportunity to build toward the cosmic revelations awaiting at the conclusion of Season 1.
