Horror has experienced a remarkable resurgence lately, with directors known for their original nightmares increasingly taking over established franchises. Few filmmakers exemplify this shift better than Zach Cregger, whose transition from cult favorites to mainstream horror sensation has become one of the genre’s most discussed journeys.

Cregger’s path has been anything but conventional. He earned acclaim with ‘Barbarian’ before transforming ‘Weapons’ into a genuine box office success, raking in $270 million globally from a $43.5 million domestic opening, which solidified his credibility in the industry ahead of his next project.

That next project marks his first major franchise endeavor, and early projections indicate it’s set to be a significant one. Cregger’s reimagining of ‘Resident Evil’ is currently tracking for a domestic opening between $40 million and $50 million, potentially making it the biggest debut in the franchise’s history.

This marks a notable increase. Just days prior, Box Office Pro’s long-range forecast estimated the film’s opening weekend in the $30 million to $40 million range, attributing the rise to Cregger’s expanding fanbase and ‘Resident Evil’s’ established brand recognition, which are key factors elevating it above other recent horror releases from acclaimed genre directors.

To put this into perspective, no ‘Resident Evil’ film has ever surpassed $27 million domestically in its opening weekend. The record is held by 2010’s ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife,’ which debuted at $26.6 million, while the original 2002 installment opened to $17.7 million. Therefore, even the lower end of the new projections would signify a substantial advancement for the seven-film series.

The upward trend aligns with broader data emerging in recent weeks. The Quorum’s eight-week tracking chart reportedly indicated ‘Resident Evil’ achieving 51 percent awareness and 52 percent interest, the highest scores of any film at that time, roughly six weeks ahead of its release.

These figures reportedly outperformed even Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ at a similar stage in its promotional cycle, highlighting the effectiveness of Sony’s marketing efforts, which included a Comic-Con panel and trailer release that seem to resonate well with audiences.

Much of this excitement appears to be directly linked to Cregger himself. His ability to attract general audiences beyond hardcore horror fans—a challenge the ‘Resident Evil’ franchise has historically faced despite its strong gaming roots—is being highlighted as a key differentiator this time around.

The film centers on Bryan, a medical courier portrayed by ‘Weapons’ alum Austin Abrams, whose delivery goes disastrously wrong. It also features Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser, and is set to hit theaters on September 18.

Whether the final film can live up to this pre-release excitement remains to be seen, but the numbers alone have already positioned ‘Resident Evil’ as one of the most anticipated horror releases of the year. With tickets now on sale and word of mouth continuing to grow, Cregger’s venture into franchise filmmaking appears poised for significant success.
