Hollywood often celebrates underdog stories, but few have unfolded quite like this one. What started as a shelved animated comedy, destined for a tax write-off, has transformed into one of the most remarkable comeback tales in recent years.

‘Coyote vs. Acme,’ the hybrid live-action and animated film featuring Looney Tunes, spent years in limbo after Warner Bros. abruptly canceled its release. For a time, it seemed audiences might never get to see the completed movie.

However, thanks largely to one particularly devoted fan, the situation changed, and now the cast is ensuring he feels appreciated. At the film’s premiere, stars John Cena, Lana Condor, Will Forte, and others expressed heartfelt gratitude to the protester who famously donned a Wile E. Coyote costume and campaigned tirelessly for the film’s release.

This fan became somewhat of a folk hero within the film community after he picketed outside the Warner Bros. lot in the rain, fully dressed as Wile E. Coyote, following the movie’s cancellation. His protest went viral, igniting a larger public movement advocating for the film to be released.

That spirit was palpable at the film’s world premiere at the Directors Village theater in Westwood. A costumed Wile E. Coyote character paraded down the red carpet alongside the UCLA marching band, holding a sign that read “Absolute Cinema,” a direct reference to the viral protest footage that kept the film’s fate in the public eye.

This character also appeared inside the screening, holding another sign that simply stated, “Thank you fans.” It was a fitting tribute for a film whose entire journey to theaters has been shaped by audience determination rather than studio confidence.

Director Dave Green captured the moment’s disbelief, admitting he still found it hard to believe they had finally reached the premiere after years of uncertainty. He told TheWrap that he couldn’t quite grasp that they had arrived at this moment.

Forte echoed that feeling, expressing his eagerness for audiences to finally experience the film after years of delays. Speaking to TheWrap, he shared his excitement about the project and how proud he was to be part of it.

Ketchup Entertainment ultimately stepped in to acquire the film after its cancellation, sparking immediate celebration among the cast and crew. Voice actor Eric Bauza, who voices Wile E. Coyote, began hashtagging posts to celebrate the news within hours of the announcement, while co-star P.J. Byrne expressed his excitement online, crediting the fans’ persistence for making the film’s rescue possible.

The film officially hit theaters this week, distributed by Ketchup Entertainment following its wide theatrical rollout. Green marked the occasion with a public thank-you letter, framing the release as evidence that dedicated audiences can genuinely influence a film’s fate when a studio’s initial decision falters under public scrutiny.

For a movie literally about an underdog taking on a powerful corporation, having its real-world release story reflect that very narrative feels almost too fitting to be coincidental. The fan who once stood alone in the rain outside a studio lot is now, in a very real sense, a key reason why ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ exists in theaters today.
