‘The Whisper Man’ Shows Robert De Niro Can Dominate Netflix Despite Mixed Reviews
Netflix has had an eventful year releasing star-studded thrillers aimed at capturing immediate attention, and its latest crime drama, ‘The Whisper Man’, boasts an impressive pedigree. Produced by the Russo brothers’ AGBO banner, the film features a stellar cast including Robert De Niro, Michelle Monaghan, Adam Scott, and Michael Keaton, a lineup typically reserved for high-profile theatrical releases rather than a streaming debut.
Based on Alex North’s bestselling novel, the story revolves around a widowed crime writer whose young son goes missing shortly after they move to a small town previously haunted by a serial killer known as the Whisper Man. In his quest for answers, he seeks help from his estranged father, a retired detective who originally captured the killer, drawing him back into a case he believed was closed.
Since its release, ‘The Whisper Man’ has quickly ascended to become one of Netflix’s biggest hits, reaching the top of the platform’s movie charts globally. This success is notable given its mixed critical reception, currently holding a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which places it in the “rotten” category, even as audiences flock to view it.
The disparity between viewership and reviews is not uncommon for Netflix’s mid-budget genre films, but it stands out due to the star power involved. De Niro stars as retired Detective Inspector Pete Willis, with Monaghan as Detective Amanda Beck and Scott as Tom Kennedy, the grieving father at the heart of the mystery. Keaton plays Frank Carter, the original Whisper Man now imprisoned.

Critics have generally praised the cast for elevating a story that relies on familiar genre tropes. Many reviews highlight the film’s atmosphere and performances as its strongest elements, even while noting that the central mystery lacks the tension found in more compelling entries of the serial-killer thriller genre.
Behind the scenes, the film provided a unique opportunity for two Hollywood legends who had never shared a scene despite both appearing in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Jackie Brown’ years ago. Monaghan reflected on the experience of watching De Niro and Keaton interact on set, calling it a memorable moment, stating that the confrontation was “an amazing thing to behold.”
“My character got to listen a lot that day,” Monaghan recounted in an interview with Tudum. “I got to watch them work together, and it was an amazing thing to behold. That was a really special day.”

This kind of star chemistry seems to resonate with viewers, despite the critics’ divided opinions. According to tracking site FlixPatrol, ‘The Whisper Man’ has maintained the number-one position on Netflix’s U.S. movie chart, while also ranking high on the global list, only falling behind a short preview of Grand Theft Auto VI, which does not compete as a traditional feature film.
The film also continues a strong trend for Netflix’s original movie lineup, which has embraced star-studded mid-budget thrillers as a reliable method to attract viewers between larger tentpole releases. Whether ‘The Whisper Man’ will sustain its chart dominance in the coming days remains to be seen, but its initial performance suggests that star power and a gripping premise were sufficient to captivate audiences, regardless of critical feedback.
