Tom Cruise has dedicated nearly forty years to establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s most enduring action stars, consistently showcasing a fit and youthful image. From hanging off airplanes in ‘Mission: Impossible’ to portraying a fighter pilot in ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ he has rarely allowed audiences to see him in anything less than peak physical condition.

This makes his upcoming collaboration with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu particularly noteworthy. ‘Digger’ represents Cruise’s first significant character transformation since he donned prosthetics for the role of studio executive Les Grossman in 2008’s ‘Tropic Thunder,’ but this time, the change is even more dramatic.

At 64, Cruise required extensive prosthetics and makeup to convincingly portray Digger Rockwell, an oil tycoon just a year older than himself. This transformation included thinning gray hair, facial prosthetics, and a noticeably heavier physique. The shift from his usual appearance is so striking that early trailers intentionally obscured his face, teasing only his silhouette before revealing the full transformation.

In ‘Digger,’ Cruise portrays an eccentric oil tycoon with a thick Southern accent whose company triggers an ecological disaster, pushing the world to the brink of nuclear war. This forces Rockwell to address the very crisis he created. The role is built around eccentricity and moral chaos, a stark contrast to the disciplined heroes Cruise has typically embodied.

Iñárritu, who has been working on this project since shortly after winning his second consecutive directing Oscar for ‘The Revenant,’ praised Cruise’s dedication to the role. “The transformation he went through was astonishing,” Iñárritu shared in a video message at a Warner Bros. event, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “‘Alejandro, it took me 40 years to become this character,’ he told me once. We both understand what it means to carry an entire career into a single moment like this.”

The director noted that neither he nor Cruise had ever tackled a role quite like this before. “We both knew that throughout our journeys, we had never done anything even close to this,” Iñárritu remarked.

Cruise echoed this sentiment, describing ‘Digger’ as a culmination of his career and a challenge unlike any he has faced. He explained that the character work behind the transformation begins with understanding how to serve the story. “When we’re looking for characters, we’re looking for humor, drama, certain constructs [and asking] ‘How do we communicate this?’” Cruise stated, according to Variety.

The physical transformation required to embody Rockwell involved more than just makeup; it included facial and body prosthetics along with a thinning, white hairpiece to convincingly portray the character’s age and eccentricity. This level of commitment has generated excitement among fans and critics alike ahead of the film’s release.

‘Digger’ is scheduled to hit theaters on October 2, offering audiences their first extended glimpse at what could be one of the most surprising performances of Cruise’s career.
