Christopher Nolan has dedicated nearly two decades to demonstrating that ambitious, star-studded filmmaking can still attract massive audiences to theaters. This summer, however, has been particularly remarkable. His latest release has spent weeks defying conventional box office trends, maintaining a level of audience engagement that few modern blockbusters can replicate.

That film is ‘The Odyssey,’ Nolan’s expansive, nearly three-hour adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic poem, featuring Matt Damon as Odysseus and a stellar ensemble cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, and Robert Pattinson. Shot entirely on IMAX film cameras and rated R, the film appeared to be an unconventional choice for a summer blockbuster, yet it has consistently exceeded expectations since its debut on July 17.

This momentum has now propelled the film past another significant milestone. According to updated estimates, ‘The Odyssey’ has surpassed the $550 million mark domestically, earning an additional $3.74 million on Friday from 2,617 locations. This 27% dip from the previous Friday still reflects the film’s unusually strong legs. The total domestic gross now stands at approximately $553.26 million.

Such sustained performance places ‘The Odyssey’ in rare company within Nolan’s filmography. Before this achievement, only one other Nolan film, 2008’s ‘The Dark Knight,’ had crossed the $535 million domestic threshold, making this latest milestone a significant career achievement for the director.

The film’s opening alone indicated it was destined for greatness, launching to $123.5 million domestically and $263.7 million worldwide, marking the biggest global opening of Nolan’s career at that time. Audience data also indicated that the film resonated well beyond the older moviegoers typically attracted to a Greek epic, with about half of ticket buyers aged between eighteen and thirty-four.

‘The Odyssey’ has also become a true phenomenon in IMAX, being the first feature ever shot entirely using the format’s specialized cameras. It became IMAX’s second-fastest film to reach $100 million in ticket sales, achieving that milestone in just ten days and eventually surpassing the IMAX totals of Nolan’s own ‘Oppenheimer.’

Globally, the film’s numbers have been equally impressive. ‘The Odyssey’ has already crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, officially becoming Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever and surpassing 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ It now ranks as the second highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, trailing only ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ while also standing as the top R-rated release of the year both domestically and internationally.

Jim Orr, President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution at Universal, attributed the film’s success to the trust Nolan has cultivated with audiences throughout his career. The film’s steady, gradual climb, rather than a front-loaded opening weekend, has become one of its defining characteristics, allowing it to continue adding tens of millions of dollars even a month and a half into its theatrical run.

With competition from other major summer releases continuing to fill theaters, ‘The Odyssey’s’ ability to maintain this level of consistency highlights just how effectively it has captured audience attention. Whether it can continue climbing toward the all-time domestic top twenty remains to be seen, but its current trajectory suggests that Nolan’s Greek epic is far from finished making history.
