In the latest installment of Taylor Sheridan’s espionage drama ‘Lioness’, the third season continues to navigate two timelines, gradually revealing how CIA officer Joe McNamara became a prisoner of Russian operatives. This narrative structure allows each episode to feel like a crucial piece of a larger puzzle, with the current captivity storyline looming over every flashback to the events leading up to her abduction.

The fifth episode deepens this exploration, immersing viewers in the counterintelligence sting that ultimately made Joe a target for kidnapping. Zoe Saldaña reprises her role as Joe, alongside Nicole Kidman as Kaitlyn Meade, Morgan Freeman as Edwin Mullins, and Michael Kelly as Byron Westfield. Together, they execute two simultaneous operations aimed at exposing foreign recruitment networks infiltrating American institutions.

Titled “The Idiot Army,” this episode primarily unfolds in the past, set six months prior to Joe’s abduction, and follows the initial day of a covert operation codenamed Treasure. One storyline features Two Cups posing as a defense contractor salesman at a strip club known for asset recruitment, where he is intentionally honeypotted by a woman collaborating with Belarusian agents who film him for blackmail. He alerts his team the following morning, prompting the CIA to raid the location before the footage can be used against him.

The second, more critical storyline follows Cruz and Josie as they focus on Cade McWeaver, a young engineer linked to a defense contracting firm. Instead of treating him as a criminal, Joe and her team confront Cade directly, leading him to reveal that his compromise began not with money, but with a favor from his handler, known only as Rooster, who had provided him with answers to a college exam years earlier, creating a lasting leverage.

Joe turns this leverage against Rooster by having Cade arrange a meeting through his phone, resulting in the CIA capturing Rooster when he arrives. During interrogation, Rooster is identified as a contract agent for Chinese intelligence while maintaining a legitimate engineering job. He eventually divulges the name at the top of the chain: Professor Richard Ealy of Georgetown University, who is suspected of supplying exam answers to select students as a long-term recruitment strategy.

Simultaneously, Kyle conducts a parallel interrogation of Russian-linked operatives, including a Belarusian national named Alex who claims a Lithuanian identity, suggesting his loyalties may not be strictly Russian. A separate briefing escalates the stakes, revealing a list obtained from a source within Russian intelligence that allegedly names compromised officials across American institutions, including two senators.

Rather than pushing for public arrests that could undermine institutional trust, Joe suggests a more discreet approach, offering every compromised official twenty-four hours to resign and cooperate to avoid prosecution. She personally executes the final part of this plan by arresting Professor Ealy, confronting him about the disparity between his political sympathies and his comfortable lifestyle before taking him into custody.

Later that night, Joe recounts the day’s events to her husband Neal, referring to individuals like Ealy as “useful idiots,” a term she attributes to Lenin for sympathizers who inadvertently advance a rival power’s agenda without being trained spies, which gives the episode its title. The narrative then shifts back to the present, where Joe remains captive of Renat, shown being taken off a private jet at what seems to be a location in Texas, hinting at where her captors may be headed next.

By connecting Cade, Rooster, and Ealy into a single recruitment chain, the episode clarifies that Joe’s abduction was not a random act of retaliation but a direct consequence of the network she dismantled. With three episodes left before the season finale, the stage is set for a potential rescue operation that could involve familiar faces from the broader ‘Lioness’ universe.
