‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Directors Russo Brothers Eye Highest-Grossing Directors Title
Superhero cinema has achieved numerous box office milestones over the years, but few filmmaking duos have influenced that landscape quite like Anthony and Joe Russo. Their tenure behind the camera on some of Marvel’s most significant team-up films has firmly established them among the most commercially successful directors in the industry today.
This success can be traced back to a series of MCU blockbusters that redefined the earning potential of superhero films worldwide. Beginning with 2014’s ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ the Russos went on to direct ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ with the latter two ranking among the highest-grossing films ever released.
With two more major Marvel installments on the way, the Russos find themselves on the brink of an even greater milestone. Currently, they sit fourth on the list of highest-grossing directors of all time, boasting a combined $6.76 billion in worldwide box office earnings. Depending on the performance of their next two films, they could realistically ascend to the top spot.
Their current ranking places them just behind Christopher Nolan, who recently surpassed them following the tremendous success of ‘The Odyssey,’ raising his career total to approximately $7.35 billion. Ahead of Nolan are the two directors who have long dominated this list: James Cameron, with around $10.59 billion, and Steven Spielberg, the all-time leader, with about $10.94 billion.
What makes the Russos’ situation particularly intriguing is not only their current standing but also what lies ahead. ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ is set to hit theaters on December 18, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in 2027. Together, these two films are projected to generate over $5 billion based on typical Avengers-tentpole performance.
If these projections hold true, the Russos would easily reclaim their position ahead of Nolan and could potentially narrow the gap on both Cameron and Spielberg as well. This scenario would have seemed unimaginable just a decade ago when the brothers were primarily recognized for their work on sitcoms like ‘Community’ before Marvel entrusted them with ‘The Winter Soldier.’
Their MCU contributions alone illustrate how rapidly their trajectory changed. ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ grossed approximately $2.05 billion worldwide, while ‘Avengers: Endgame’ achieved an even more astonishing $2.8 billion, briefly surpassing Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ as the highest-grossing film of all time before being overtaken again.
With Robert Downey Jr. returning in a new role and the X-Men reportedly playing a part in the storyline, ‘Doomsday’ has generated immense anticipation well ahead of its release. This suggests the film is well-positioned to perform at the scale necessary to significantly elevate the Russos in the all-time rankings. Whether this will genuinely challenge Cameron and Spielberg’s standings remains to be seen, but the mathematical path is clearly laid out if both films meet expectations.
For now, the Russos find themselves in a captivating holding pattern, close enough to box office history that two strong openings could redefine their place among cinema’s most commercially successful filmmakers.
