‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Aims to Break Domestic Box Office Records
Summer box office trends typically follow a familiar pattern: a strong opening weekend followed by a gradual decline as audiences flock to the next big release. However, Sony and Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has spent the past month defying these expectations entirely.
Since its debut on July 31, the film has already made history multiple times, from achieving the largest domestic opening weekend ever to becoming the second-fastest film to reach $1 billion globally. Each subsequent weekend has added to its impressive milestones, and the film shows no signs of slowing down even after a month in theaters.
This past weekend continued the trend, with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ maintaining its position at the top of the box office for the fifth consecutive weekend, earning $22.2 million domestically—a mere 44 percent drop from the previous week, according to Variety. This brings the film’s domestic total to an astonishing $891 million.
This figure is significant as it inches closer to the record held by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which has dominated the unadjusted all-time domestic box office with $936 million since 2015, as reported by TheWrap. Surpassing this mark would make Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man film the highest-grossing movie in North American history.
An even more remarkable milestone lies ahead. Once ‘Brand New Day’ surpasses the ‘Force Awakens’ benchmark, it will be on track to become the first film ever to cross $1 billion at the domestic box office alone, a feat that has yet to be achieved in Hollywood.

On the international front, ‘Brand New Day’ has also made waves, surpassing $2.33 billion worldwide, positioning it to potentially overtake ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ for third place on the all-time global chart and marking it as Sony’s highest-grossing release ever.
Weekend competition has not significantly hindered the film’s momentum. Ketchup Entertainment’s ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ debuted strongly in second place with approximately $15.4 million, while Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ continued its impressive run in third place, maintaining solid numbers well into its extended theatrical release.
Given the current pace of decline, industry experts predict that ‘Brand New Day’ will likely surpass the domestic record within the next week, possibly around Labor Day weekend. From that point, the focus will shift to how far beyond $1 billion the film can soar before its theatrical run concludes.
For a franchise that has been around for over two decades, witnessing one entry poised to become the largest domestic release in movie history is remarkable. Whether this record will stand for years or face new challengers soon, ‘Brand New Day’ has already established itself as one of the defining box office stories of the year.
