Netflix’s ‘Minecraft’ Animated Series Is Still in Production But Faces Longer Wait
Netflix and Mojang Studios first announced their animated ‘Minecraft’ series on May 30, 2024, coinciding with the game’s fifteenth anniversary. The project promises an original story featuring new characters rather than rehashing existing narratives. Canadian animation studio WildBrain, known for ‘Sonic Prime’ and ‘Carmen Sandiego,’ is responsible for the CG animation.
Since the initial announcement, updates have been scarce. The last significant milestone occurred at the Annecy Animation Festival in June 2025, where Netflix’s Dominique Bazay confirmed ongoing collaboration with Mojang and introduced the core creative team along with early concept art. Following that, fans experienced a long period of silence.
This silence led to rampant cancellation rumors, which often arise when high-profile streaming projects go quiet for too long. However, these rumors have been firmly dismissed. Both Netflix and Mojang’s Jens Bergensten confirmed that the WildBrain-produced series is still in production, though fans should not expect it to premiere anytime soon.
The most direct confirmation came from Bergensten himself, Minecraft’s Lead Designer and Creative Director, who addressed the speculation on Bluesky on August 28. In response to a fan account inquiring about the series’ status, Bergensten wrote simply, “Yes we are still working on it!”
This wasn’t the first time he had to quell rumors. Bergensten previously reassured fans back in June that the Netflix show was still active, despite a mix-up regarding Minecraft capes that had briefly muddled the conversation.
In addition to Bergensten’s comments, there are subtle but telling signs that the project remains active. Many individuals involved in the series, including production team members, continue to list their roles as current, which typically wouldn’t happen if a project had been formally canceled.
This combination of official denials and ongoing staffing details aligns with Netflix’s historical approach to its larger animated productions. Major original animated series at the platform often require three to four years from greenlight to release, and ‘Minecraft’ is currently within that timeframe without a confirmed premiere date.
Given that production seems to be progressing on schedule but there are still no significant visual updates as we approach the latter half of 2026, the most realistic expectation is that the series may not debut until 2027 at the earliest, and possibly even 2028. This extended timeline for a project first teased over two years ago is typical for ambitious CG productions.
For now, ‘Minecraft’ fans can take comfort in knowing that the show is indeed real and moving forward, even if the wait for a trailer, voice cast announcement, or release window is set to stretch considerably longer. Whether this patience will pay off as it has for other long-gestating streaming adaptations remains to be seen.
