Seven weekends into its theatrical journey, Christopher Nolan’s mythic epic continues to defy box office expectations. What began as a bold gamble—a nearly three-hour, R-rated adaptation of ancient Greek poetry—has transformed into one of the year’s most significant cinematic events, consistently surprising industry experts.

This trend continued over the Labor Day weekend, with ‘The Odyssey’ climbing back to the top of the domestic box office, reclaiming the number one spot it had briefly lost in previous weeks. Its ability to attract audiences this late in its release has become a hot topic among analysts monitoring the summer box office recovery.

According to box office analyst Luiz Fernando, ‘The Odyssey’ earned an impressive $1.9 million on its seventh Monday, marking only a 26.9% decline from the previous Monday, despite losing 474 theaters heading into the weekend. This performance sets a record for the highest earnings on a seventh Monday for an R-rated film, surpassing ‘Obsession’s’ $1.5 million.

This consistent performance also ranks as the second-biggest seventh Monday in Christopher Nolan’s career, only behind ‘The Dark Knight’s’ Labor Day-boosted $2.5 million, and the second-largest for any July release, following ‘Barbie’s’ holiday-boosted $3.2 million.

Thanks to this sustained momentum, ‘The Odyssey’ has reached a domestic total of $565.8 million, positioning it to surpass ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s’ $574.9 million and become Universal’s second-highest-grossing film ever in North America, trailing only ‘Jurassic World.’

The film’s trajectory has consistently exceeded expectations. Just two weeks ago, the $600 million domestic mark seemed like a ceiling; now, it appears to be a new baseline given the film’s impressive holds as it heads into fall.

Industry forecasts now suggest ‘The Odyssey’ could ultimately reach between $610 million and $630 million domestically by the end of its theatrical run, a range that seemed almost impossible for an original, adult-oriented epic when it first premiered in July.

‘The Odyssey’ has already become Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film globally, surpassing $1 billion earlier this summer and eclipsing ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ as his career benchmark. Additionally, it has become IMAX’s biggest release ever, generating nearly $289 million in ticket sales through that format alone.

With Labor Day traffic providing another significant boost and demand for premium formats remaining strong, ‘The Odyssey’ continues to demonstrate that audiences are eager for large-scale theatrical experiences, even beyond established franchises. For Universal, the film’s ongoing success into September adds to what has already become one of the studio’s most successful theatrical releases in recent history.
