HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series Trailer Reveals First Looks at Hagrid, Dumbledore, Snape & the Weasley Family
Casting new faces for a beloved franchise is always a challenging task, especially when the original actors have become cultural icons. This challenge is central to HBO’s ambitious new adaptation of ‘Harry Potter’, which has been gradually revealing its ensemble cast over the past few months.
Fans received their first significant look at the young trio back in March, when a teaser introduced Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout as Harry, Hermione, and Ron. This early glimpse became the most-watched teaser in HBO Max history, setting high expectations for the subsequent marketing efforts.

Now, HBO has unveiled a more comprehensive trailer that prominently features the Hogwarts staff and the extended Weasley family, who complete the show’s extensive ensemble. Nick Frost takes on the role of Rubeus Hagrid, John Lithgow portrays Albus Dumbledore, and Paapa Essiedu plays Severus Snape. The trailer allows each actor to establish their unique interpretations of characters previously brought to life by Robbie Coltrane, Richard Harris, Michael Gambon, and Alan Rickman.

Essiedu’s portrayal of Snape features one of the trailer’s standout moments, as he delivers a sharp remark to Harry during Potions class, suggesting he hopes Harry shows more talent on the Quidditch pitch than in the classroom. This immediate disdain sets the tone for how the series intends to explore Snape’s complex relationship with Harry from the outset.

Frost’s Hagrid anchors one of the trailer’s emotional moments, assuring Harry that family extends beyond blood and that he will find his place at Hogwarts. This sentiment contrasts with Harry’s earlier doubts, where McLaughlin’s character expresses feeling like a great wizard despite not knowing much at all.

Janet McTeer’s Professor McGonagall also shines in several scenes, establishing her as a stern yet genuine mentor to Harry during his first year. Lithgow’s Dumbledore appears in multiple sequences, overseeing the Great Hall and guiding the youngest students through their initial experiences at Hogwarts.
In addition to the main trio and faculty, the trailer dedicates time to introducing the extended Weasley family, featuring Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, alongside Tristan Harland and Gabriel Harland as twins Fred and George, Ruari Spooner as Percy, and Gracie Cochrane as Ginny. Ron’s introduction shows him squeezed among his brothers at home before boarding the Hogwarts Express, highlighting the family dynamic that has long been a fan-favorite aspect of the books.
The broader cast includes Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as caretaker Argus Filch, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, alongside younger actors like Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy and Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom. This extensive casting reflects the show’s commitment to faithfully adapting J.K. Rowling’s original seven-novel saga, avoiding the compression of storylines that characterized the film franchise.
With showrunner Francesca Gardiner and ‘Succession’ director Mark Mylod at the helm, the eight-episode first season is set to premiere on December 25 on HBO and HBO Max. This new ensemble now carries the weight of introducing a new generation to the magical world of Hogwarts.
