Netflix Is Developing a New ‘Ravenloft’ Live-Action Series for Dungeons & Dragons Fans
Live-action adaptations of ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ have faced numerous challenges in reaching the screen, with many projects failing to progress beyond the development phase. This history of setbacks led to concerns that Netflix’s own D&D aspirations might encounter similar issues.
Recently, Netflix made a significant shift in its approach. After investing a year and a half in developing ‘The Forgotten Realms,’ a live-action D&D series with Shawn Levy as executive producer and Drew Crevello as writer, the project has been shelved.
In its place, Netflix is now working on ‘Ravenloft,’ a new live-action series inspired by the gothic horror setting of Dungeons & Dragons. The series is being developed by writer and executive producer John August, alongside executive producer Alfonso Cuarón and Hasbro Entertainment, as reported by Deadline.
‘Ravenloft’ is described as a prestige fantasy series where adventure intertwines with gothic horror and tragic romance. The series will explore character-driven narratives rooted in dark magic and supernatural intrigue, centering on the origin of Darklord Strahd von Zarovich, one of D&D’s most infamous villains. His transformation from tragic antihero to undead tyrant is driven by themes of power, love, obsession, and loss, according to SFF Gazette.
This focus on Strahd’s evolution allows the series to delve into a character study rather than a conventional fantasy adventure, embracing the morally complex villain origin story that has gained popularity across streaming platforms. ‘Ravenloft’ was first introduced in 1983 by Tracy and Laura Hickman and has since become one of the most-played settings in D&D history, leading to over a hundred official novels, tabletop RPG modules, and video games, as noted by Deadline.
August’s involvement brings a wealth of experience in gothic storytelling, having previously written or co-written five Tim Burton films, including ‘Big Fish,’ ‘Corpse Bride,’ ‘Dark Shadows,’ and ‘Frankenweenie,’ along with ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.’ This sensibility aligns ‘Ravenloft’ with Netflix’s existing supernatural hit ‘Wednesday,’ which shares a similar gothic tone, partly due to Burton’s role as director and executive producer.
Cuarón’s participation adds another layer of prestige to the project, marking his return to Netflix eight years after ‘Roma’ made history as the first Netflix film to receive a Best Picture nomination. According to ScreenRant, this ‘Ravenloft’ series is distinct from Cuarón’s existing first-look deal with Apple TV, which began in 2019, indicating a new collaboration between the filmmaker and the streamer.
Completing the production team, August will executive produce alongside Gabriel Marano for Hasbro Entertainment, while Cuarón will produce through his Esperanto Filmoj banner, alongside Richard Schwartz and Gaby Rodriguez.
Hasbro has prioritized securing a live-action D&D series in recent years, especially following the critical acclaim of 2023’s ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.’ However, this endeavor has proven challenging, with a previous television adaptation from Rawson Marshall Thurber and Crevello receiving a straight-to-series order at Paramount+ in 2023 before ultimately falling apart.
With ‘The Forgotten Realms’ now on hold and ‘Ravenloft’ stepping in as Netflix’s primary D&D project, the streamer seems committed to discovering the right creative approach for bringing the tabletop franchise to a wider audience. Given the combined talents of August and Cuarón, expectations for the project’s tone and ambition are already high among fans of the franchise.
